Craniometric variation and the settlement of the Americas: testing hypotheses by means of R-matrix and matrix correlation analyses.

New archaeological findings and the incorporation of new South American skull samples have raised fundamental questions for the classical theories of the Americas' settlement. The aim of this study was to estimate craniometric variability among several Asian and Native American populations in order to test goodness of fit of the data to different models of ancient population entries and dispersions into the New World. Our data set includes Howells' variables recorded on East Asian, North American, and South American natives (except for Na-Dene speakers). Five Fuego-Patagonian samples and one Paleoamerican sample were also included. A multivariate extension of the R-matrix method for quantitative traits was used to obtain Fst values, which were considered estimations of intergroup variation. Three main models for the peopling of the New World were represented in hypothetical design matrices. Matrix permutation tests were performed to quantify the fit of the observed data with 1) geographical separation of the samples and 2) three ways of settlement, which were the Three Migration Model (TMM), the Single Wave Migration model (SWM), and the Two Components Settlement Model (TCS). R-matrix results showed high levels of heterogeneity among Native Americans. Matrix permutation analyses suggested that the model involving high Amerindian heterogeneity and two different morphological patterns or components (derived "Mongoloid" vs. generalized "non-Mongoloid") explains better the variation observed, even when the effects of geographical separation are removed. Whether these patterns arose as a result of two separate migration events or by local evolution from Paleoamericans to Amerindians remains unresolved.

[Chemical substances, work and neurologic changes: possible relationships between those variables].

Authors searched 239 reports of patients admitted in a hospital who carried neurological pathologies with unknown etiologies in order to find the possible relationship between the disease and the occupational use of chemical substances. They found the occupation in 32 reports. 37.50% of the patients worked with agriculture; 34.37% were maids/worked at home; 12.50% were masons; one was a shoemaker, one a saddler; one made furniture and the others worked with machines. Considering their activities, they possibly used chemical substances. Few information relating this utilization and the presented disease showed the reduced importance given to these variables.

[Mental disorders during pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium in the region of Ribeiro Preto-SP, Brazil].

The present study have found out the number of patients assisted at the sector of Psychiatric Urgencies (SUP) and at the Midwifery Clinic of the University Hospital at Ribeirão Preto (HC), with the diagnosis 648.4 (Mental Disorders in Pregnancy, Childbirth and Puerperium), according to CID-9, from 1988 to 1993. Authors searched for reports containing informations on the care provided in these services. The sample was formed by women from 15 to 29 old years, whose disorders include psychotic disorders, depressive cases with or without attempts of suicide and non-specified mental disorders. Some of this disorders showed in comorbidity with others diagnostics. Resulting showed the need of nurses paying more attention to manifestations of these disorders and search for means to enable the identifications in the care provided at emergencies.

[Street cleaners: occupational accidents in the city of Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, Brazil].

The work of street sweepers is to sweep waste materials thrown at public streets. It is considered insalubrious due to the close contact that exposes workers to agents present in the urban waste. As street orderlies perform their duties in an open environment, they are submitted to different types of problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the registered occupational accidents occurred among street orderlies in the city of Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, during 1993 and 1994. Authors aimed at verifying: the number of works that suffered accidents and the notified occupational accidents; data related to the identification of those accidents at the employer company and specific data regarding the occupational accidents. Therefore, authors analyzed the occupational health reports recorded at the National Institute of Social Security at the Regional Bureau of Health (RBH) and at the employer company. Results were shown to the employers and to the RBH. Authors organized meetings to discuss with them the occupational problems they found.

[Suicide, self-mutilation and poisoning in adolescents: an epidemiological study].

This is an epidemiological study on Self-Inflicted Suicide and Lesions (E950 to E959) that we do not know if they are accidentally or intentionally inflicted (E980 to E989) among adolescents attended in a Psychiatric Ward at an Emergency Service in Ribeirão Preto, S.P., Brazil, from 1988 to 1991. The diagnoses were grouped according to CID-9. Data were obtained from the Hospital Statistics Service. The feminine sex predominated in the 4 years and in both diagnoses. It was observed that the occurrence of E950 to E959 increased during the period, while the occurrence of E980 to E989 decreased among the adolescents.

[Psychiatric disorders related to alcohol and associated to general medical clinical diagnoses and/or surgical interventions in patients admitted to a general hospital].

Through an epidemiological examination, the authors searched for co-morbidities and for psychiatric diagnoses related to alcohol. So, patients attended in a Psychiatric ward at an Emergency Service from 1988 to 1991 were investigated. The aim was to identify clinical diseases and another incidents that assault this population. The diagnoses examined were the ones related to alcohol, according to CID-9 (291; 303; 305.0) and the ones associated that do not belong to psychiatry 1835 cases were observed with diagnoses related to alcohol and among them 487 (26.5%) were concerning to the groups 291-303-305.0, which were associated to another psychiatric diagnoses. The larger frequency occurred in the groups 340-349 (Another central nervous system disorders) and 800-859 (Lesions and traumatic complications) with 80 (16.4%) patients, respectively. Through data observation by year, authors found that among the diagnoses related to alcohol (with clinical diagnoses associated), the 303 (Alcohol dependence syndrome) was the one that had the larger number of patients with 326 (67%) cases, followed by the 291 (Alcohol psychoses) with 117 (24%) cases and the 305.0 (Alcohol) with 44 cases (9%). In the period, the psychiatric diagnoses 303 and 291 appeared more frequently associated to the group of clinical diagnoses 340-349, with 55 (11.2%) and 12 (2.4%) cases respectively and the 305.0 had the group 800-859 with 10 (2%) cases as the more frequent.

[Evaluation of a computer system by nursing students].

This study was undertaken to investigate the opinion of nursing undergraduate students of the first year about the discipline "Informatic applied to health". Data were collected using a questionnaire with open and closed questions applied through three consecutive years (1989, 1990, 1991). The results showed that undergraduate students considered this course important. Student's expectations were related to the necessity to get familiar with computers. The mentioned critiques were related to the necessity of more time and equipments to support a better learning process.

[A sample of scientific production in southeastern Brazil from 1987-1991].

The study's goal was to investigate the scientific production in Brazil's southeast region during 1987 to 1991 period. To do thal, letters were sent to 15 nursing schools that we had the address or through personal contact with someone from the institutions, asking a list of their scientific production during the period above stated. In order to be included in the study, the article had to meet some criteria that were established as important for a quantitative evaluation and classification. After that, qualitative classification was done by the article's tile using nine categories. The total of publications found were 2237 articles from which, 1585 were from nursing schools in the state of São Paulo, 222 from hospitals in the city of São Paulo, 296 from Federal University of Minas Gerais' School of Nursing and 134 from nursing schools in Rio de Janeiro.
