Sialodochoplasty--does it work?

Isotope scanning of the salivary glands was carried out post-operatively on 8 patients who had sialodochoplasty carried out by the Wilkie technique. This showed reduced function to a varying degree in every parotid gland whose duct was repositioned, indicating some atrophy, but there was still sufficient function to justify the procedure.

The intraoral basal cell adenoma.

The histological and clinical behaviour of nine intraoral salivary basal cell adenomas is described. Despite problems in classification, this study confirms the impression that these are all benign salivary gland tumours which respond well to localized excision only.

Cervical paragangliomas: a report of four cases.

Four cases of cervical paragangliomas are reported. Two cases were of presumed vagal origin and two were carotid body tumours. In three of the cases the diagnosis was not made prior to surgery. The diagnosis, pathology and management of the cases are discussed.

Surgical approach to the pterygomaxillary region.

It is often difficult to treat tumors of the pterygomaxillary region because of limited surgical access and nearby critical vascular and neurologic structures. An inferolateral approach, individualized to meet the specific needs of each case, is often ideal for providing adequate access. In previously untreated cases and with smaller lesions, mandibulotomy often is not necessary. Mandibulotomy, when necessary, provides the best visualization of this area and can be accomplished with minimal morbidity. Three illustrative examples are discussed.

Idiopathic lingual mandibular bone "depression".

A case of Stafne's idiopathic lingual bone depression is described. This occurred in the classical position below the mandibular molars. On surgical exploration, the defect was found to contain a lymph node rather than the more usual salivary tissue. This may throw some light on the possible etiology of this condition.

Compression osteosynthesis in mandibular fractures.

A study of the results of 26 cases of mandibular fracture treated by dynamic compression osteosynthesis by means of compression plates is presented. The advantages and disadvantages and complications of this technique are discussed.

Intraoral dermis grafting: has it any advantages?

Results are reported from a series of twenty-four patients who received intraoral dermis grafts for a variety of conditions and have been followed for between 6 months and 4 years. Advantages and disadvantages of dermal grafting, including contracture, the final histologic and clinical appearance of the graft, and problems with the donor area, are discussed.

Fiberoptic antroscopy.

Radiographs of the maxillary sinus can be difficult to interpret, and, on occasion, they can be equivocal or even misleading. Although tomography or computerized tomography may help, these investigations are time consuming and are not universally available. Use of the rigid fiber optic antroscope may represent a viable alternative for the method of examination of the maxillary antrum that is quick and able to be performed as an office procedure using local anesthesia. The procedure is well tolerated and associated with a very low morbidity.

Second primary tumor associated with salivary gland cancer.

That patients with salivary gland cancer are at increased risk of second primary tumors has been suggested in several studies. This report presents the case of a 53-year-old woman with an epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of intercalated duct origin occurring in the parotid gland synchronously with a follicular cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland. This is believed to be the first report of such an association.
