Ring chromosome 4.

A mentally and physically retarded boy with a 46,XY,ring (4) (p16q35) chromosome complement is described. Chromosome banding showed that the amount of chromosome material deleted from the ring chromosome 4 was minimal, apparently no more than the telomeres. Chromosomal aberrations appear to be restricted to the production of double-sized dicentric rings, and aneuploidy. The mosiacism resulting from the behavioural peculiarities of ring chromosomes is described as dynamic mosaicism. It is suggested that the clinical features associated with this ring chromosome are more likely to be the result of the effects of a diploid/monosomy 4/polysomy 4 mosaicism than to the deficiency of the telomeric regions of the chromosome.

Familial hypokalaemia and hypomagnesaemia. A further family.

A family of four siblings is reported. While both parents and one sib appear entirely normal, three other sibs give biochemical evidence of impaired potassium conservation, hypomagnesaemia and decreased urinary calcium output. Affected sibs may be symptom free and of either sex. The dominant clinical abnormality, when it does occur, is tetany and may be precipitated by non-specific illness. Sustained management of the hypokalaemia seems desirable.

Advantages of aluminium hydroxide adsorbed combined diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccines for the immunization of infants.

Three combined triple antigen vaccines were used to inoculate infants receiving primary immunization at 3 to 6 months of age. Laboratory potency and toxicity tests and clinical evaluation again showed that the mouse weight gain test is able to predict which vaccines will give reactions in children. The addition of aluminium hydroxide to the vaccine both increased potency and reduced the tendency to cause reactions. Assays on sera showed that almost all children produced agglutinins to Bordetella pertussis types 1, 2, and 3 when the vaccine contained aluminium hydroxide.
