The effects of daily melatonin injections on female gonads in Rana ridibunda were examined. Melatonin-treated R. ridibunda maintained on a long photoperiod (18L:6D) had significantly smaller gonads than control animals. Thus, frogs injected daily with melatonin exhibited a substantial decrease in ovary weight when compared to saline-injected animals. Our findings suggest that melatonin exerts antigonadal effects in female Rana ridibunda.
1. The results obtained by ovine prolactin administration during the larval development of Discoglossus pictus (OTT) suggests that prolactin-like hormone is the "larval factor" necessary for growth and for maintaining the larval aquatic features. 2. Bromocriptine treatment during the larval development of D. pictus has contrary effect on growth and larval structures. 3. Prolactin administration does not inhibit but delays metamorphosis. 4. When bromocriptine is added at late stages of the development, metamorphosis is accelerated.
1. M LDH polymorphism has been previously described in Discoglossus pictus. 2. Gene frequency at the LdM locus varied significantly in two isolated areas which differed markedly in water oxygen tension. 3. Sex distribution, relative activity of the LDH isozymes, percentage of total H and M subunits and enzyme kinetics did not differ among the distinct LDH phenotypes. 4. Under decreasing oxygen conditions, mean time to death, LT50 and oxygen consumption were similar in tadpoles of the three LDH phenotypes (fast, intermediate and slow). 5. Our results are compatible with a neutral role for this LDH polymorphism.

The electrophoretic isozyme patterns, total and specific activity of lactate dehydrogenase on skeletal and cardiac muscles in Discoglossus pictus and Rana ridibunda have been studied. The isozymes were separated out in polyacrylamide gels. The LDH activity bands were developed selectively. The percentage of the H subunits are significantly higher in Discoglossus than in Rana, probably becuase Rana is subjected to more severe anaerobic conditions during the hibernation time.

An investigation has been carried out into the structure, ultrastructure, function and of the oviduct on the adult female of Rana ridibunda. The most important part of the oviduct comprises tubulary glands and a luminal epithelium which is composed of ciliated cells and vesicular cells. The discharge processes of secretory substances were studied. Injection of the mature females with estrogens and progesterone have show that progesterone was the most effective in provoking jelly release. It is probably that in Rana ridibunda the pituitary hormones act on the follicle cells of ripe oocytes, causing them to secrete a progesterone-like hormone which provodes the maturation of the oocytel and jelly release from the oviducal glands.
