Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver--a rare entity and a diagnostic challenge.

Inflammatory pseudotumors are rare benign lesions that occur throughout the body. Hepatic pseudotumors are uncommon lesions, accompanied by fever, malaise, abdominal pain, and mass effect, and therefore are commonly misdiagnosed as malignant tumors or liver abscesses. Because even routine imaging procedures usually fail to differentiate hepatic pseudotumors from liver neoplasms, a diagnostic histology procedure is usually needed. We present a case of hepatic pseudotumor that resolved spontaneously and review the literature, including 40 previously reported cases and the differential diagnosis.

A new method for determination of maitotoxin by capillary zone electrophoresis with ultraviolet detection.

Capillary zone electrophoresis with UV detection was applied to the rapid and efficient separation of an underivatized phycotoxin, maitotoxin, associated with ciguateric fish poisoning. Highly sensitive detection was obtained by UV absorption at 195 nm. A detection limit of 50 pg of maitotoxin was achieved at this wavelength. Analysis involved using a fused silica capillary coated with a hydrophobic phase, polyvinylalcohols. Confirmation of the electrophoretic peak of maitotoxin was further evaluated by cytotoxicity on a mammalian fibroblastic cell line, BHK 21 C13.

Modulation of fibroblast response to maitotoxin along the cell division cycle.

Maitotoxin (MTX) induces an increase of [Ca2+]i and of phosphoinositide breakdown in various cell types. The [Ca2+]i increase followed with fluorescent probes on cell suspensions has been described as slow and lasting, in contrast to the "signal" induced by calcium ionophores such as ionomycin. MTX effects have been studied on two fibroblastic cell lines, BHK21 C13 and FR 3T3, synchronized by serum deprivation treatment performed in an isoleucine-free medium for BHK21 C13 cells. In BHK21 C13 cells, flow cytometry analysis showed that two stages, G1/S and G2/M, were particularly susceptible to MTX treatment. Scanning laser cytometry demonstrated that calcium response of FR 3T3 fibroblasts followed with Indo-1 varied during the cell division cycle. The [Ca2+]i increase was almost always vertical, but its delay after MTX addition lasted from zero (S and G2/M transition) to 10-20 min (G1) or more (G2). No [Ca2+]i change could be detected during mitosis. The [Ca2+]i response at the S phase was biphasic. These observations suggest that (1) the lasting response described in the literature represents a global cell population effect, and (2) cells are more sensitive to MTX at specific stages of the cell division cycle, which could correspond to periods when calcium signals have been detected in different cell types.

Aluminium bone deposits in normal renal function patients after long-term treatment by plasma exchange.

The accumulation of aluminium (Al) can cause Al bone deposits, osteomalacia and encephalopathy. As albumin solutions used as replacement fluid in plasma exchange (PE) are contaminated with Al, we studied Al overload in two symptomless patients with normal renal function, treated by long-term plasma exchange (PE). Total Al loading was calculated at 1750 mumol in patient 1 (178 PE sessions) and 2100 mumol in patient 2 (153 PE sessions). Bone biopsy showed Al deposits and low bone formation without osteomalacia in patient 1 and only osteoporosis in patient 2. Plasma Al levels were useless in detecting early Al overload, because the remained in the normal range, even after PE in both patients. Bone biopsy was the best means of recognizing Al intoxication, but cannot be recommended for frequent evaluations. However, the desferrioxamine mobilization test can be proposed as a repetitive non-invasive investigation method.

[Demonstration of plasminogen activators in the saliva of a predatory insect of the family of Reduviidae (Heteroptera)].

The study of digestive and salivary proteases of Rhapactor biparticeps, has shown that the salivary glands of this insect are rich in proteolytic enzymes, however, the gut has none. The characterisation of these enzymes on different substrates showed that they are only active on fibrinogen and plasmatic proteins which are involved in the coagulation system. Among these fibrinolytic enzymes that has been identified and characterized, are the plasminogen activators. Their unexpected presence in the entomophagic insect is discussed.

[Clinical aspects and course of Adamantiades-Behçet disease in Tunisia: a report on 41 cases (author's transl)].

The clinical aspects and course of Behçet's disease in Tunisia are discussed. This affection is of frequent occurrence and should be systematically searched for in all patients with uveitis. Ocular manifestations are observed in 95 p. cent of cases. These are characterized by their polymorphic nature and the diagnosis should be suspected in cases with uveitis, periphlebitis, venous thrombosis, vitreous hemorrhage, congestive glaucoma, or macular edema. The characteristic signs of the disease appear over an extended period of time, making definite diagnosis difficult, but early, vigorous therapy is necessary to ensure a favorable prognosis.

[A new plasminogen activator isolated from the saliva of Rhapactor biparticeps (Heteroptera, Reduviidae): biological and physicochemical properties].

A new plasminogen activator has been isolated from the saliva of Rhapactor biparticeps. This product is 5% of salivary proteins and acts at an optimal pH of 7.8.P.D.F which results from its action on human fibrinogen are similar to those which are obtained with streptokinase. The modalities of action of this plasminogen activator on the fibrinogen are discussed.

[Effect of olive leaves (Olea europea) feeding on the in vitro JH III biosynthesis by the corpora allata in Schistocerca gregaria during vitellogenesis].

Per os administration of olive leaves (Olea europea) to females of Schistocerca gregaria results in stopping vitellogenesis. These vitellogenins are not synthesised by the fat body in the heamolymph. The vitellogenin inhibition is induced by the stopping of juvenile hormone JH III by the corpora allata. These corpora allata (Medicago sp.) Synthesise 10 times less JH III than those of alfalfa fed females.
