Personal themes from training groups for health care professionals.

The personal themes presented by 210 health care professionals in the training group component of an annual group psychotherapy course are described. The course, begun in 1976, provides inexperienced group leaders with an introduction to theory and a personal group experience in 12 weekly sessions. Within this brief period, the development of a cohesive working group is possible. Members have revealed much personal tragedy which cannot be expressed at work for fear of being thought weak. At times in their clinical work members have felt helpless and hopeless. Giving care and not receiving it has been a burden. The group experience has allowed members to transcend professional rivalries and see each other as people and not in stereotype. Members have often feared damaging their careers by self-disclosure and, for some, the group has provided the first opportunity for intimate dialogue with colleagues. The groups have supported members through personal crises and helped them make career decisions. The results highlight the value to staff of having a safe, non-punitive group setting in which they may speak of personal issues that trouble them, begin to become aware of how their own personality and life experience may impair and enrich their ability as therapists, and surmount the obstacle of stereotyping to meet their colleagues in dialogue.

The Nottingham experiential day in psychotherapy: a new approach to teaching psychotherapy to medical students.

A prime objective in teaching psychotherapy to medical students is to convey a practical understanding of what happens and a sense of the pleasure and responsibility of working with another person to improve the quality of their relationships. In Nottingham an experiential day was developed during the psychiatry clerkship; the teaching is by doing rather than describing, while spontaneity and individual expression are encouraged; the experience is valued by most and forgotten by none; it would be improved by a second experiential day or by a weekly forum for discussion of the personal and patient-care issues raised.

Towards a conceptual framework of psychotherapy: a personal view.

A conceptual view of psychotherapy is put forward for discussion and debate. The view is a personal one based upon experience of life and the practice of psychotherapy over a 10 year period. Harmony between the therapist's personality, the process of therapy and the nature of good human relationships is important. Therapy is seen as a practical discipline and a creative art in which the focus should be upon the patient's existence now and what it could be tomorrow.

Group therapy in the treatment of diabetes.

The psychological burden imposed by diabetes is large but is often ignored by health care professionals who concentrate on its technical aspects. In this article we review the need for psychosocial support in the treatment of diabetes. Group psychotherapy, although most widely used in psychiatry, was in fact started by a physician almost 80 yr ago and has been used as an adjunct to the management of many medical conditions. Limited experience of group psychotherapy among diabetic patients has given encouraging results. Issues remain, however, as to which groups of patients might benefit most, who should act as group leader, and how one can best assess outcome.
