Drugs and chemicals are capable of producing a wide spectrum of hair loss, ranging from barely detectable shedding to frank, irreversible baldness. Agents may act directly or indirectly upon the follicle, but in either case, diagnosis of subtle alopecia can be difficult. General aspects of the clinical and research problems have been discussed, and 40 drugs and drug classes that have been linked to hair disturbances have been reviewed.

A patient is presented with a recalcitrant penile lesion which demonstrated the clinical and histologic features of the balanitis originally described by Zoon. The status of this disease and its relationship to similar disorders are discussed.

A case of Netherton's syndrome is reported herein and twenty-four previous cases reviewed and tabulated with respect to age, sex, family history, intelligence, consanguinity, aminoaciduria, atopy, recurrent infections, and IgG. This syndrome is characterized by the presence of trichorrhexis invaginata, a distinctive hair shaft abnormality, and either ichtyosis linearis circumflexa or congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma. Recent investigations have shed light upon the pathogenesis of this disease but the precise structural, biochemical, and genetic abnormalities have not been elucidated.
