Critical thinking. A framework for problem solving in the occupational setting.

1. Critical thinking is essential in providing quality nursing care. Understanding the process of critical thinking increases the nurse's efficiency in the skill of problem solving. 2. To employ the critical thinking process, the nurse must analyze and criticize a problematic or change situation, reason, make inferences, and reach conclusions. 3. The result of critical thinking is attaining goals, solving problems, and making decisions. 4. Critical thinking is a process and not an outcome.

Antidepressants. A pharmacological update and rationale for treatment.

1. Depression has a prevalence and incidence of significance affecting the morbidity and mortality of the population as a whole and the work force in particular. A variety of risk factors are associated with depression. Certain drugs and conditions may bring on or mimic depression. 2. The symptoms of a major depressive episode, taken as a whole, have certain objective, definable characteristics. Several classes of drugs are used in the treatment of depression. 3. There are a variety of theories regarding the pathophysiology of depression. The various classes of drugs have mechanisms of action which attempt to address aspects of these theories. 4. The ideal antidepressant drug has a number of qualities, some of which are shared by current medications. None of the currently available antidepressants has all of the ideal drug's properties.

Evaluation of selected new drugs: 1990.

1. The new drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration during 1990 are presented. 2. The pharmacologic actions, indications, dosages, precautions, and adverse reactions of selected new medications are considered. 3. The occupational health nurse can use this information to help clients understand and follow drug treatment plans.

Licensure and entry into nursing practice. A survey of occupational health nurses' opinions.

Since 1965, the controversial question of what level of educational preparation is appropriate and necessary for entry into nursing practice has been discussed. No consensus has been reached by the members of the nursing profession as a whole. The opinions of occupational health nurses toward the requirement for initial registered nurse licensure and entry into occupational health nursing practice was assessed. The study revealed occupational health nurses generally supported their respective basic programs for initial licensure and entry into occupational health nursing.
