Results of investigation of the chicken and mouse interferons by electrofocussing in sucrose and in polyacrylamide gel are described. The isoelectric points of these interferons were determined. The advantages of the electrofocussing in gel over that in sucrose for the interferon analysis was shown.

The brain cells of the suckling mice line MSB-1-K-33 chronically infected by an attenuated variant of the Japanese encephalitis virus and of cell clones isolated from the later, had mainly a neartetraploid keryotype (the modal class 70-71 chromosomes). In metaphases of cloned cell populations, an increase of number of the chromosomes was especially obvious in clones 3 and 4 (modal classes in both cases were 76-77 chromosomes). Cell population of clone 1 differed insignificantly from that of the parental line MSB-1-K-33 in respect of its cytogenetic characteristics. In metaphases of the line MSB-1-K-33 and clones 1, 3, and 4, a high frequency of chromosomal damages was observed. The most frequent type of structural chromosome aberrations were chromatid breaks. The karyotypes of clones 3 and 4 were characterized by presence of a large marker metacentric chromosome in 50-53% of the cells. The data obtained suggest a continuous effect of the Japanese encephalitis virus on the karyotype of cells in infected culture.
The method of differential centrifugation was used for concentration and purification of the minimal form of oncornaviruses type A and C. The structures showed heterogeneous distribution in sucrose density gradient and formed a peak in the zone of 1.135 g/ml. Electron microscope examinations of negatively stained preparations showed that the size of the minimal forms of oncornaviruses type A and C was 25-60 nm, the diameter of nucleoids 10-30 nm.
The method of fluorescent antibody (MFA) has first been used for the study of regularities of human interferon biosynthesis in superinduced cells. The dynamics of the appearance and accumulation of interferon in individual cells and the dependence of these processes upon the time elapsing since the termination of superinduction were determined. Clear-cut inverse relationship between the interferon content in cells (MFA) and the interferon content in the culture fluid (titrations of biological activity) was established.
The characteristics of human embryo lung culture spontaneously contaminated with mouse cells (HELCCM) are presented. Changes in the cytological and karyological characteristics of the cells were observed as compared with those of the initial human embryo lung (HEL) cell strain. The culture acquired the resistance to adenovirus type 7; at the same time RNA metabolism in HELCCM culture culture chronically infected with adenovirus practically did not differ from that of the control. Electron microscopic examination of the culture revealed virions of oncornavirus types A and C as well as minimal forms of oncornaviruses which morphologically were close to murine oncornaviruses. The results indicate that in the process of passages the initial diploid cells of HEL were eliminated by mouse cells. Therefore at present, the HELCCM cell line is considered to be a mouse line.
