The clinical and histopathological findings are described in a 10-year-old girl with xeroderma pigmentosum and multiple ophthalmic complications, including the eyelids, conjunctiva, orbit, cornea and iris; some of these complications took an unusual form. Histological examination following right orbital exenteration revealed an epibulbar squamous cell carcinoma penetrating the orbit and building a noose all around the ocular globe with subsequent strangulation. Moreover, a palpebral squamous cell carcinoma developed-independently from the right lower lid and, unconnected with the epibulbar tumor, penetrated to the orbit.
Fibrolamellar variant of hepatocellular carcinoma is a distinct clinicopathologic subset in the broad group of hepatocarcinomas. Though it is a rare entity, it must be well known because this variant occurs in young people and may have a better prognosis than the usual type of hepatocellular carcinomas. The authors present the light microscopic aspects in one case that allowed the diagnosis of fibrolamellar hepatocarcinoma, relating them to the ultrastructural characteristics of this variant, and comparing them with light and electron microscopic features of typical hepatocellular carcinomas.
Fourteen liver tumor samples, obtained by echographically-guided thin needle aspiration biopsy were electron microscopically studied, pointing out the ultrastructural aspects that allowed the diagnosis of primary and secondary liver neoplasia, and those providing indications for malignancy degrees. Criteria of electronoptic differential diagnosis between dysplastic and malignant lesions are presented. The paper suggests that electron microscopy may be helpful in establishing the forms of liver carcinoma, difficult to be determined only by cytologic examination, and for the early diagnosis mandatory to increase the resectability rate of malignant hepatoma.

Histoenzymatic and ultrastructural changes were studied in axillary lymph nodes from patients with breast cancer by comparison between lymph nodes without metastases, with incipient metastases and completely metastatically transformed. Metastases is preceded by intense macrophagic reactions of lymph nodes, and prepared by the development of vascular stroma. Neoplastic cells in course of invasion presented an intense respiratory activity, while those replacing the lymphoid elements an accentuated synthesis of glycoproteins.
Liver cell changes produced in rats by the ligature of the portal vein and of the spleen pedicle were studied by electron microscopy. There were differences in the liver response to the various types of circulatory disturbances. The earliest and most marked lesions of hepatic cells were noticed in the case of portal vein ligature, and occurred at the level of rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and lysosomes. No significant changes in Kupffer cells. When the spleen pedicle was ligated, the hepatic cell changes were less obvious, but the Kupffer cells changes were more prominent, testifying and increased hetero- and autophagy.
