[Significance of skin changes in diabetes mellitus].

500 patients of a dispensaire of diabetes were inspected dermatologically. 335 patients had a duration of the glucose metabolism intoleration less than 10 years and 165 patients more than 10 years. 215 patients stated a striking family case history according diabetes. 54 per cent (273) of the cases showed an adiposity, 418 patients (83.6 percent) had pathological changes of the skin and mucosal changes. It is clear that dermatomycoses, eczema and pyodermias occur more often with acute metabolic disorder and adiposity. Neurovascular changes of the skin occur with long persistent glucose metabolism intoleration. Bad healing tendencles of wounds, pruritus, intensive dermatomycoses, balanitis, vulvitis, furunculosis and pyodermias are important references to a glucose metabolism intoleration. They should give rise to look for a diabetes irrespective of the age of the patient.

[The use of 60Co-gamma ray-sterilized calf serum in cell culture].

The use of 60Co-gamma-radiation-sterilised calf sera in cell culturing is reported in this paper. Evidence was produced to the effect that 60Co-gamma-irradiation, using a dosage of 3 kGy and a dose rate of 8 kGy/h, of fetal calf serum, neonatal calf serum, and calf serum did not substantially alter the growth-stimulating properties of those sera during 42-day tests. With almost all cell lines and sera used, for all practical purposes, they were identical with the properties of control sera. The following cell lines were used in the experimental programme: one human mammary tumor, MaTu, one human embryonic cell line--E VI, one bat lung cell line--Tb1-Lu, and one human rhabdomyosarcoma--A 204. Growth stimulation was twelve percent below the control value only with Tb1-Lu on Eagle-MEM culturing medium with 3-kGy-irradiation of neonatal calf serum. On the other hand, cell growth was stimulated by 28 percent in A 204 on RPMI 1640 culturing medium, again with 3-kGy-irradiation of neonatal calf serum. Loss of activity by up to 30 percent, depending on the serum used, must be expected from irradiation doses of 10 kGy and 20 kGy which are capable of causing drastic reduction or even complete elimination of serum-borne microorganisms (Bender et al., 1989). Sera irradiated that way would be only conditionally applicable, when it comes to highly vulnerable cell strains.

[The inactivation of mycoplasmas and bacteria in calf serum by 60Co gamma rays].

Reported in this paper is the use of 60Co gamma radiation to inactivate mycoplasmas in calf serum, newborn calf serum, and fetal calf serum. A dose of 3 kGy, independent of dose rate, was found to be sufficient for inactivation in the above sera of several mycoplasmas, including Acholeplasma laidlawii, Mycoplasma (M.) orale, M. arginini, M. hyorhinis, and M. bovis. The critical dose proved to be at 2 kGy. No difference was found to exist between the above species in susceptibility to irradiation in diluted sera (50%) and 10% in Eagle MEM). Sensibility of wild mycoplasma strains was found to be identical with that of laboratory strains. Hence, 60Co gamma irradiation of sera appears to be a safe method by which to make sera mycoplasma-free. Bacillus subtilis in calf serum was inactivated by doses above 18 kGy, with the critical dose being 15 kGy.

Rumen dry matter degradability and apparent digestibility of variously treated rice hulls.

Rice hulls from Hungary, Colombia, and Cambodia were used for measuring with the nylon bag method the dry matter degradability in the rumen of sheep. After 48 h rumen incubation time the dry matter loss varied between 10.0 and 27.7%. The 48 h rumen dry matter loss of rice hulls from Hungary increased from 14.0 (untreated control) only to 17.9, 20.1, and 17.0% after chemical treatment with 2% NaOH, 4% CaO, and 4% urea, respectively. gamma-irradiation with doses of 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 MGy effected rumen dry matter losses of unground rice hulls from Hungary of 6.4, 14.5, 13.5, 21.3, 37.1, and 70.5%. The apparent digestibility of organic matter of untreated rice hulls from Hungary amounted to 19.2%, as found in tests with wethers. The main reasons of low digestibility and the negligible effect of chemical treatments are the high contents of lignin (ca. 15%) and silica (up to 23% of the dry matter). Therefore rice hulls are not suitable as feedstuff for ruminants.

Diagnosing alcoholism in high-risk drinking drivers: comparing different diagnostic procedures with estimated prevalence of hazardous alcohol use.

In several European countries, drivers under influence (DUI), suspected of an alcohol use disorder (AUD, 'alcoholism') are referred for diagnostic examination. The accuracy of diagnostic procedures used in diagnosing AUD in the DUI population is unknown. The aim of this study was to compare three prevalence estimates of AUD based on a structured clinical interview (SCID), a restrictive diagnostic procedure (RDP) and usual clinical diagnostic procedure (CDP), with a prevalence estimate based on sensitivity and specificity data of biological markers of excessive use of alcohol in non-judicial samples. The latter unbiased estimate provides an external yardstick against which the biased patient-based prevalence estimates in this special sample can be evaluated. The unbiased estimate derived from sensitivity and specificity data resulted in a prevalence estimate of excessive use of alcohol between 74 and 82%, which is much higher than the three diagnostic procedures. SCID identified maximally 5% of alcoholics found with the unbiased estimate. RDP identified > or =31% of the unbiased estimate, while CDP identified > or =60% of the unbiased estimate. The high chance of false positive diagnosis, however, makes CDP unacceptable in the legal context of AUD diagnosis in DUI populations.
