Questionnaires were sent to interdisciplinary UAF programs across the country to assess the types of handicapped school children who were receiving services at their facilities. A return rate of 65 percent was obtained and the total sample of children was 2088. Results indicated that a wide variety of ages and handicapping conditions were reported. Referral sources and services rendered were analyzed, and implications for cooperation with public school personnel were discussed.
Proper design of fume hoods is a necessary requisite for a clean working environment for many industrial processes. Until recently, the design of these hoods has been rather a trial and error approach and not based on sound engineering design principles. Hatch Associates have developed and applied new techniques to establish hood parameters for different industrail processes. The paper reviews the developed techniques and illustrates practical application of these techniques to the solving of difficult and comples fume hood design and operating performance problems. The scope of the paper covers the following subject areas: definitions and general considerations: evaluation of volume and heat flow rates for emission sources; local capture of process emissions; remote capture of process emissions and case studies of fume hood applications. The purpose of the paper is to detail a coherent approach in the analysis of emission problems which will result in the development of an efficient design of a fume capture hood. An efficient fume hood can provide a safe working place as well as a clean external environment. Although the techniques can be applied to smaller sources, the case studies which will be examined will be for fume hoods in the flow design range of 50 000 CFM to +1 000 000 CFM.
The initial multidisciplinary evaluations on 40 dyslexic children were reviewed in an attempt to identify factors which might favor a positive outcome from educational remediation. The children manifested a high incidence of dysarticulation, impaired auditory discrimination and visual motor perceptual delays. All of the subjects exhibited progress at a constant rate (reading quotient) while enrolled in a full-time remedial program for dyslexic children. Factors predictive of significant improvements could not be identified. The hypothesis that brighter dyslexic children improve more in a remedial setting was not supported. Initial mathematics quotients, however, were higher and demonstrated more improvement than initial reading quotients in all groups. Implications for educational policy and pediatric practice are discussed.
Using field observations, modelling techniques and theoretical analysis, parameters describing the performance and collection efficiency of large industrial canopy fume hoods are established for, a) steady state collection of fume and b) collection of plumes with fluctuating flowrates. Hopper and pool type hoods are investigated. A baffle plate arrangement for placement within hoods is proposed. It prevents recirculation and spillage of fume. Temporary storage of fume surges within the hood is shown to be possible. At a cost of $6 per m3/hr ($10 per ft3/min) of installed fume control system capacity the arrangement promises to save millions of dollars on large new installations and to significantly improve the collection efficiency of many existing systems. A practical application of the results is proposed for the design of electric arc furnace canopy hoods.

L-p-Chlorophenylalanine (L-PCPA) was given in a dosage of 1.5 g daily, to 6 healthy male subjects over a period of 12 days. No effect on plasma luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), growth hormone (GH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), testosterone and other steroid hormones could be observed. These results are discussed in respect to the sexually stimulating effect of PCPA.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) is the largest fire department in the United States. In 1996, FDNY added the thermal protective hood to its modern protective uniform. The purpose of this study is to determine 1) the effectiveness of hoods in reducing head burns and 2) whether hood water content (dry, damp, or saturated) affects the level of thermal protection. Laboratory tests (radiant heat performance, thermal protective performance, and fully dressed manikin) and FDNY field results were used. Laboratory tests evaluated 4 different conditions (no hood, dry, damp, and saturated hoods) exposed to 4 different heat fluxes (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 2.0 cal/cm2/sec) equivalent to approximate air temperatures of 200, 400, 600, and 2,250 degrees F. Field results compared FDNY head burns during 3 winters wearing the hood to 3 winters without hood. Wearing a hood dramatically reduced head burns. This was true for all laboratory tests, at all heat flux exposures, and all hood water content conditions. At 0.1 cal/cm2/sec, dry hoods were superior to wet hoods. At all other heat flux exposures, thermal protection was either not significantly different between water content conditions or improved as water content increased. Confirming these laboratory tests, FDNY field results showed significant decreases in neck burns (by 54%), ear burns (by 60%), and head burn totals (by 46%). Based on combined laboratory and field results, we strongly recommend the use of modern thermal protective hoods.
An introduction to the causes and problems of learning disabilities is given, with a description of the tests used by the educator in an effort to diagnose and plan for remediation of the disability.
