Measurement of the D(s)+ lifetime.

A high statistics measurement of the D(s)+ lifetime from the Fermilab fixed-target FOCUS photoproduction experiment is presented. We describe the analysis of the two decay modes, D(s)+ --> phi(1020)pi+ and D(s)+ -->K*(892)0K+, used for the measurement. The measured lifetime is 507.4 +/- 5.5(stat) +/- 5.1(syst) fs using 8961 +/- 105 D(s)+ --> phi(1020)pi+ and 4680 +/- 90 D(s)+ --> K*(892)0K+ decays. This is a significant improvement over the present world average.

Evidence for a kaon-bound state K(-)pp produced in K(-) absorption reactions at rest.

We have searched for a deeply bound kaonic state by using the FINUDA spectrometer installed at the e(+)e(-) collider DAPhiNE. Almost monochromatic K(-)'s produced through the decay of phi(1020) mesons are used to observe K(-) absorption reactions stopped on very thin nuclear targets. Taking this unique advantage, we have succeeded to detect a kaon-bound state K(-)pp through its two-body decay into a Lambda hyperon and a proton. The binding energy and the decay width are determined from the invariant-mass distribution as 115(+6)(-5)(stat)(+3)(-4)(syst) MeV and 67(+14)(-11)(stat)(+2)(-3)(syst) MeV, respectively.

Necropsy and coprology in wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Livorno Mountain Park (Tuscany, Central Italy).

The present research analyses the reliability of coprological tests, both quantitative and qualitative, as indicators of the parasite burden of hosts, using data from wild boars (Sus scrofa) living in Livorno Mountain Park (Tuscany, Central Italy). In the case of intestinal strongyles, which turned out to be the dominant helminths of wild boars, the qualitative coprological test appears as a bad predictor of the real parasite situation of the herds, due to the high number of false negative results (34 animals out of 68). On the other hand, the positive predictive value of the test is high (90%). The quantitative test is significantly correlated with the individual parasite burden of wild boars.

Epidemiological study of the intestinal helminths of wild boar (Sus scrofa) and mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon) in central Italy.

Since 1995 the population of wild ungulates increased significantly in the "Parco provinciale dei Monti Livornesi" (Livorno, Tuscany, Central Italy). We studied the intestinal macroparasites of two hosts, the wild boar (Sus scrofa) and the mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon). In the case of wild boars we found a dominant parasite species, Globocephalus urosubulatus. For this parasite the frequency distribution of the number of parasites per host agrees with a negative binomial distribution. There is not a significant correlation between the age of the animals and the parasitosis. Furthermore the mean parasite burden of male and female wild boars does not differ significantly. In the case of mouflons we found a dominant parasite species Nematodirus filicollis with Trichuris ovis as codominant species.

[Combined intra-arterial locoregional and systemic treatment of nonresectable hepatic metastases of colorectal carcinoma].

Intra-arterial hepatic chemotherapy (LAHC) results in significantly higher response rate than the best systemic treatment of liver metastases from colorectal cancer, but no survival advantage has to date shown because of extra-hepatic progression. From June 1991 to December 1994, twenty patients with hepatic metastases from colorectal cancer were enrolled. All patients underwent laparotomy for the placement of an intra-arterial catheter into the gastroduodenal artery connected with a subcutaneous port. All patients underwent cholecystectomy and biopsy of liver lesion to confirm metastatic disease. Locoregional schedule was: 5-fluorouracil (5FU) 500 mg/sqm, epirubicin (EPI) 13 mg/sqm, mitomycin-C (MMC) 7 mg/sqm, in bolus every 3 weeks. Systemic therapy consisted of leucovorin 500 mg/sqm, over 2 hours and 5FU 600 mg/sqm in bolus every week. Treatment was planned over a six month period. The complete response (CR) plus partial response (PR) rate was 50% of the entire group. The median survival was 18 months and 1- and 2- and 3-year survival rates were 71%, 38% and 20% respectively. Prior to chemotherapy, LDH value and % of liver involvement were the only significant prognostic parameters. Toxicity was absent or mild and no patient stopped treatment because of side effects. Combined systemic and IAHC is an effective treatment for liver metastases from colorectal cancer, with a mild or moderate toxicity. However, more trials are needed, to improve the control of the extrahepatic disease.

Intra-arterial hepatic carboplatin-based chemotherapy for ocular melanoma metastatic to the liver. Report of a phase II study.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: ocular melanoma tends to metastasize to the liver, sparing for a long time the rest of the organism. Therefore, a regional treatment is especially indicated. METHODS: eight patients with ocular melanoma metastatic to the liver were treated with intra-arterial hepatic carboplatin-based chemotherapy at the dose of 300 mg/m2 once every two weeks at an out-patient clinic. All the patients were submitted to laparotomy with surgical implantation of an arterial port device through the gastroduodenal artery. RESULTS: the overall response rate was 38% with a median survival time of 15 months. The regimen was well tolerated and the principle toxicity was myelosuppression; any instance of hepatic and/or cholangitic damage was reported. CONCLUSIONS: Carboplatin seems suitable for intra-arterial hepatic chemotherapy and active in ocular melanoma metastatic to the liver.

[Breast pathology from the viewpoint of a breast cancer outpatient clinic].

3450 women were examined in the Breast Cancer Clinic of the 2nd General Surgery Division of the Mantova Hospitals between November 1979 and November 1982. Cancer was found in 105 cases (3.04%). The variety of conditions observed and the tests used to discover whether they were benign or malignant are described.
