Body surface maps in left bundle branch block uncomplicated or complicated by myocardial infarction, left ventricular hypertrophy or myocardial ischemia.

We provided a topographic and quantitative description of body surface maps (BSM) during the entire QRST interval in seven uncomplicated LBBBs and 31 LBBBs complicated by: myocardial infarction (MI, seven cases), left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH, eight cases), myocardial ischemia (IS, seven cases), MI + LVH (six cases) and LVH + IS (three cases). In all patients we observed abnormal map configurations attributable to the LBBB. We were unable to identify consistent effects of the complicating heart condition(s) on the general pattern of chest potentials. Conversely, the surface voltages were generally decreased by MI and IS and increased by LVH. By considering the 38 patients as a preliminary learning set we applied a stepwise discriminant analysis to 77 voltage-related variables derived from BSM to produce a model for discriminating between LBBBs with and without MI. We properly allocated more than 90% of the patients. We also attempted to classify the patients into four groups: pure LBBB, LBBB + MI, LBBB + LVH and LBBB + IS, with a percentage of correct classification of about 80%. The two classifying procedures were applied to ten new LBBB patients with results similar to those obtained in the 38 of the study group.

[The expression of oncogene fms in human chorionic tissue].

The roles of oncogenes have been a subject of great interest not only concerning oncogenesis but also recently concerning physiological regulation in cell proliferation and cell differentiation. We here report the expression of oncogene fms in human chorionic tissue using a molecular hybridization method. RNAs extracted from human chorionic tissue of the first and third trimester were electrophoresed in horizontal agarose gel, blotted according to Northern's method and were hybridized to 32P labeled fms-cDNA (complementary DNA). Four kb RNA molecules homologous to fms-cDNA were detected in chorionic RNAs of the first and third trimester placental tissue with an increase toward term. We then observed the distribution of fms-mRNA in chorionic tissue with in situ hybridization. The signals for fms were observed over trophoblasts without specific localization to the proliferative cells. These results revealed that oncogene fms is expressed in human chorionic tissue of both the first and third trimester. Furthermore the results suggest that the role of fms c-onc may be related to cell differentiation and not to cell proliferation.

[Use of a synchronized protocol of cytostatic drugs in the treatment of advanced lung cancer].

A synchronised programme consisting of VCR, CTX and MTX has been employed in 57 patients suffering fom lung carcinoma. Average survival was 10.6 months and overall tolerance was good. The best indications are intermittent long-term treatment and retreatment of patients with cancer recalcitrant to the same drugs. With the simplification of cell kinetics study techniques, more meaningful results can be expected in the application of this treatment programme.

Association between the interleukin-1alpha gene and Alzheimer's disease: a meta-analysis.

Inflammatory processes are involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several studies have addressed the effects of interleukin-1 (IL-1) genes polymorphisms on the risk of developing AD. The results are not in full agreement on whether these polymorphisms are associated with the disease. To clarify this issue, we performed a meta-analysis of all the association studies between IL-1 genes and AD. Due to the relatively small number of published articles, the meta-analysis was restricted to the association of the IL-1alpha -889 C/T gene polymorphism and AD. Under a random effects model, the risk for the disease was significantly higher in subjects with the T/T genotype in comparison with both C/T (OR: 1.51; 95% C.I.: 1.15-1.99) and C/C (OR: 1.49; 95% C.I.: 1.09-2.03) subjects. There was modest heterogeneity for these effect estimates. Analysis of subgroups showed a significant association in patients with early-onset AD but not in late-onset AD. Our data support a significant but modest association between the T/T genotype of the IL-1alpha gene and AD.

Age-related transcranial Doppler findings in the evaluation of cerebral circulation during postprandial and postural tests.

We used transcranial Doppler (TCD) to investigate whether there are cerebral circulation differences between young and elderly subjects in response to postprandial postural changes. Preprandial and postprandial systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, mean middle cerebral artery (MCA) velocity (Vmean MCA), systolic/diastolic MCA velocity ratio (Vs/Vd MCA) and pulsatility index (PI) were determined in 15 healthy elderly subjects (mean age 74.3 +/- 6.5 years) and in 10 younger subjects (mean age 31.6 +/- 7. 2 years) in the supine position and after a postural change. As compared with young subjects, elderly ones showed a greater postprandial systolic pressure decline (p < 0.05) associated with a significant decrease of Vmean MCA (p < 0.05), and a greater increase of Vs/Vd and PI (p < 0.05 both). We conclude that, as compared with young subjects, elderly ones have reduced cerebrovascular adaptive response to pressure modifications induced by postprandial postural changes.

[Influence of coffee on plasma lipids].

The influence of coffee on plasma lipids has been largely investigated during the last twenty years, but still many doubts remain about this subject. For this reason the influence of the assumption of coffee on plasma lipids, in healthy people, during six weeks has been studied. The coffee was prepared with an Italian coffee-machine (moka). No relationship was found between coffee assumption and increase of hematic cholesterol.
