Presence of antibodies to human lymphoma-leukemia virus (HTLV-I) in Germans with symptoms of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Sera from German patients exhibiting symptoms compatible with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or the lymphadenopathy syndrome (LAS) were assayed for antibodies against human T-cell lymphoma/leukemia virus (HTLV-I)-related antigens by enzyme immunoassay, indirect immunofluorescence, and radioimmunoprecipitation. Antibodies against HTLV were detected in 3 out of 31 sera.

Routine contrast enemas for diagnosing and managing strictures following nonoperative treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis.

A study to determine the value of contrast enemas in diagnosing and managing intestinal strictures following nonoperative treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis was performed from 1978 through 1983. From 1974 through 1977, 17 patients survived nonoperative treatment of NEC and three developed symptomatic strictures, an incidence of 18% (3/17). Since then a total of 31 infants were treated for NEC; three patients survived operation for perforation and there were seven deaths, leaving 21 in the study group. Sixteen patients had contrast enemas three to six weeks after resolution of NEC, which revealed strictures in five patients. Four of the five patients with strictures demonstrated on contrast enema were without obstructive symptoms. Three of the four remained asymptomatic without treatment, and one eventually required surgery for intestinal obstruction. The fifth patient developed intestinal obstruction while still in the nursery and a contrast study demonstrated an ileal stricture. A sixth patient had a normal contrast study and developed intestinal obstruction from an ileal stricture. The incidence of strictures was 38% (6/16). In five patients, appointments for contrast studies were not kept, although clinical follow-up was complete in all. The incidence of symptomatic strictures for the contrast study period was therefore 14% (3/21). Although some authors have recommended routine contrast enemas in patients surviving nonoperative treatment of NEC, contrast enemas had no advantage over clinical follow-up in the management of patients in this study. We have discontinued the use of routine contrast enemas in favor of close follow-up and careful instruction to parents as to the early signs of intestinal obstruction.

Virus-specific phosphoproteins in simian sarcoma virus-transformed primate cells.

Cells transformed by simian sarcoma virus (SSV) express a 115000-dalton protein ( p115 ) that is precipitated by a goat antiserum to disrupted SSV/SSAV-infected and transformed cells but not by antibodies directed against the viral gag protein, p30, or envelope proteins. The protein is detected in productively as well as in nonproductively infected, transformed cells. It is not present in untransformed cells infected with helper virus (SSAV). The protein can be phosphorylated in vivo and in vitro at the tyrosine residue and SSV-transformed cells contain elevated levels of phosphotyrosine.

[Perineural invasion in keratoacanthoma (author's transl)].

Perineural tumoral invasion, usually considered as an histological sign of malignancy, may be seen in clinically and histological typical keratoacanthoma in every phase of evolution. The authors present 8 cases, among a collection of almost 300 keratoacanthomas, localized on the face, 3 in the proliferative phase, 3 at a state of maturation and 2 in plain regression. Sometimes perineural invasion is associated with other cellular anomalies and infiltration of the muscular layers. All the lesions were chirurgically excised without recurrence after a 4 months to 3 years follow-up. Perineural tumoral invasion may be considered as an image of pseudo-malignancy.

Effects of dapsone on passive Arthus reaction and chemotaxis and phagocytosis of polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

The effects of dapsone (diaminodiphenyl sulfone) on the polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) function and on the elicitation of the passive Arthus reaction were investigated in rabbits and guinea-pigs. NBT-reduction was markedly enhanced in PMNL of animal receiving 5 mg dapsone/kg for 3 days, whereas chemotaxis and phagocytosis were not influenced. Passive Arthus reaction was clearly suppressed by the same treatment regimen. 2 mg/kg of the drug had no effect on the parameters examined.

[Spread of hepatitis B virus infection among family contacts of asymptomatic HBsAg carriers (author's transl)].

Family members of 34 asymptomatic HBsAg carriers were tested for different hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers. Among 67 family members tested 24 (36%) presented signs of a past or ongoing HBV-infection. Spread of HBV-infection was particularly high in those families in which the HBsAg carrier was positive for HBeAg and Dane particle-associated DNA polymerase activity. Non-parenteral "horizontal" transmission of HBV among spouses and brothers and sisters and probably parenteral vertical transmission of HBV from carrier mothers to their infants occurred in approximately the same frequency. Fathers transmitted HBV unfrequently to their offsprings. The results show that the risk to acquire a HBV-infection from an asymptomatic HBsAg carrier is closely linked to the serological findings in the HBe/anti-HBe-system of the index HBsAg carrier and not to the family relationship to the HBsAg carrier.

Hepatitis B virus markers among family contacts of asymptomatic HBsAg carriers.

A study was undertaken to establish the risk of family contacts of HBsAg carriers acquiring a hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. About one-third of all household contacts of asymptomatic HBsAg carriers had signs of past or ongoing HBV infection. Family contacts of HBsAg carriers with high numbers of circulating Dane particles were shown to have a higher risk of developing HBV infection than family contacts of HBsAg carriers without serological evidence of HBV synthesis. The probability of acquiring HBV infection was not different between spouses, parents, children, and brothers and sisters, respectively of asymptomatic HBsAg carriers.

Potassium cardioplegia: early assessment by radionuclide ventriculography.

Left ventricular function was evaluated by single pass Tc-99m radionuclide ventriculography when potassium cardioplegia was combined with hypothermia. In 35 patients undergoing myocardial revascularization (3 CABG/patient) in which potassium cardioplegia at 4 degrees C was used, no patient developed a myocardial infarction either by electrocardiogram or Tc-99m pyrophosphate imaging in the postoperative period. In 22 patients, aortic cross-clamp time was greater than 60 min, and the ejection fraction by the single pass radionuclide technique was 50% preoperatively and 53% postoperatively (NS). Wall motion in the single RAO view was not worse postoperatively. No patient required any inotropic agents in the immediate postoperative period. It appears that no significant ventricular impairment occurred in the immediate postoperative period (48 to 72 hours) when potassium cardioplegia combined with hypothermia was used for a 60-minute period.

Comparative evaluation of 99mTc GH, 99mTcO4, and 99mTc DTPA as brain imaging agents.

The brain imaging properties of 99mTc glucoheptonate, 99mTc pertechnetate, and 99mTc DPTA are compared. Results demonstrate that optimum images are obtained at 90, 180, and 180 min., for 99mTc GH, 99mTc DTPA, and 99mTc perterchnetate, respectively. The former two images are not affected by prior bone imaging with 99mTc pyrophosphate, while 99mTc pertechnetate images are adversely affected. 99mTc glucoheptonate appears to be the superior agent for brain imaging, followed by 99mTc DTPA and 99mTc pertechnetate.

[The characterization of clinically healthy hepatitis-b-surface-antigen (HBsAg)-carriers. Clinical, biochemical, histiological and immunological investigations in 129 case of a prospective study (author's transl)].

129 blood donors found to be HBsAg-positive on routine testing were studied for evidence of hepatic disease. Twelve had already lost the antigen from the serum when histologically examined. None of these has had clinical or histological evidence of inflammatory liver disease. Two of the 129 patients showed mild icteric hepatitis, cleared the antigen during the follow up and became anti-HBs positive. The remaining 115 patients who appeared clinically healthy and who had no history of previous icteric liver disease remained HBsAg positive during a mean follow up period of 17.3 +/- 3.0 months. Forty patients from these had a normal liver histology and 37 mild to distinct steatosis but no signs of inflammatory liver disease. 11 patients a mild nonspecific mesenchymal activity but no focal necrosis, 16 patients had mild infiltration in portal tracts and a few necrotic parenchymal cells with mesenchymal reaction, 6 patients had chronic persistent hepatitis, 4 chronic aggressive hepatitis, and 1 definite posthepatic cirrhosis.
