Evidence that some Frankia sp. strains are able to cross boundaries between Alnus and Elaeagnus host specificity groups.

Phenotypic and genotypic methods were used to prove the existence of Frankia strains isolated from an Elaeagnus sp. that are able to cross the inoculation barriers and infect Alnus spp. also. Repeated cycles of inoculation, nodulation, and reisolation were performed under axenic conditions. Frankia wild-type strain UFI 13270257 and three of its coisolates did exhibit complete infectivity and effectiveness on Elaeagnus spp. and Hippophaë rhamnoides and variable infectivity on Alnus spp. Microscopical observation of host plant roots showed that these strains are able to infect Alnus spp. by penetrating deformed root hairs. Reisolates obtained from nodules induced on monoxenic Alnus glutinosa, Alnus incana, and Elaeagnus angustifolia resembled the parent strains in host infectivity range, in planta and in vitro morphophysiology, isoenzymes, and nif and rrn restriction fragment length polymorphisms, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates on both host plant genera. Alnus and Elaeagnus group-specific polymerase chain reaction DNA amplifications, DNA-DNA hybridizations, and partial gene sequences coding for 16S rRNA provided evidence for the genetic uniformity of wild-type strains and their inclusion into one and the same genomic species, clearly belonging to the Elaeagnus group of Frankia species.

[The coronoid-maxillary space in denture retention].

The coronoid-maxillary space defines the distal maxillary rims, and it is usually tightened during mouth opening. It has been reported that its adequate filling or its overfilling is helpful in prosthesis retention. There are two types of individual anatomical variations, that can affect the size of this space. In fact, the coronoid process can be vertical or lateral. In the first case, the coronoid-maxillary space is reduced in oral opening, therefore the prosthesis edge must be thin. In the latter case, the space increases or does not vary during mouth opening, therefore the prosthesis must be thicker in order to obtain its adequate retention.

Topical canrenoic acid. Quantification of the antiandrogenic activity in the hamster flank organ.

The topical antiandrogenic activity of potassium canrenoate (CAK), compared with that of spironolactone (SP), was assayed in vivo in female golden Syrian hamsters whose flank organs were stimulated by subcutaneous administration of testosterone propionate. Sebaceous glands and hair were measured by a computerized image analyzer. Pigmented spots, sebaceous gland areas, and the diameter of hairs of the treated flank organs were smaller in the groups that received CAK (1.6 mg/day) and SP (0.4 mg/day). The authors' results showed that CAK may act as a topical antiandrogen on the hamster flank organ when applied in concentrations four times greater than the minimal active dosage of SP. Potassium canrenoate may be a useful weak topical antiandrogen, and it could be used in androgen-related skin disorders involving both sebaceous glands and hair, especially in men. These concentrations could be verified by additional clinical investigations.

Skin ultrasound in dermatologic surgical planning.

High-resolution ultrasonography was performed on 55 patients with palpable skin lesions, all submitted to surgical excision and to histologic diagnosis. In all the cases, the ultrasound picture was confirmed by the surgical appearance of the lesions. The sonographic structure was characteristic in the case of cysts and angiomas, lymphangiomas in particular. Ultrasonography is considered a simple and reliable technique for the pre-operative evaluation of skin nodules, as it gives a clear picture of their size, depth, and outline. However, sonography cannot substitute for the clinical dermatologic approach and the need for an histologic diagnosis.

Bronchial carcinoid tumors: radiologic observations in 49 cases.

A retrospective evaluation was performed of radiographs obtained in 49 cases of bronchial carcinoid at presentation and during a follow-up period of 12 years. Histologic diagnosis from the surgical specimen was available in all cases. Carcinoids appeared most frequently (77%) as round or oval opacities with sharp and often notched margins. They often induced airway compression with pulmonary atelectasis; enlarged hilar lymph nodes from metastasis were rare. Recurrence after surgical removal was not frequent; the recurrent masses had the same radiographic features as the original tumor. The diagnosis of bronchial carcinoid must be taken into consideration when a slowly growing radiopaque mass with well-defined margins is discovered on chest films. The radiologist must remember that these tumors can be resected with a fairly good prognosis even when they are large.

[Prognostic value of echocardiography with high-dose dipyridamole after recent uncomplicated myocardial infarction].

The feasibility, safety and prognostic importance of high-dose (0.84 mg/kg over 10 minutes) dipyridamole 2D echocardiography test (DET) were evaluated in 78 asymptomatic patients 10 to 14 days after uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction and the results were compared with those of exercise stress test (EST). Criteria of positivity were: for DET a new or worsening asynergy; for EST, ST segment depression greater than or equal to 1 mm (patients were in complete pharmacological wash-out). Patients were followed-up for 9 to 22 months (mean 14 +/- 5) or until one of the following end-points occurred: death, infarction or severe angina. DET was positive in 13/17 patients and EST in 5/17 patients with poor clinical outcome (sensitivity 76% vs 29%; p less than 0.005); for hard events only (death or infarction) sensitivity was respectively 64% vs 9%; (p less than 0.05). Both tests had the same specificity (92%). Cumulative event-free survival curves as a function of DET and EST results were both statistically different (p less than 0.001 and p less than 0.05 respectively). Cumulative survival curves obtained by the combination of DET and EST results showed: 1) an uneventful course in patients with both tests or only DET negative; 2) and a poor clinical outcome in patients with both test or only DET positive (p less than 0.001) DET correctly predicted clinical outcome in 12/16 patients in whom there was disagreement between the two tests. We conclude that DET is more sensitive than EST for identifying patients at increased risk for coronary events and more accurate for predicting clinical outcome after uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction.

Low doses of IL-4 injected perilymphatically in tumor-bearing mice inhibit the growth of poorly and apparently nonimmunogenic tumors and induce a tumor-specific immune memory.

The ability of rIL-4 to trigger host reactivity against both a chemically induced fibrosarcoma (CE-2) and a spontaneous adenocarcinoma (TS/A) of BALB/c mice was studied. Daily local s.c. administration around tumor draining lymph nodes of 10 injections of progressive amounts (0.00001 to 1000 pg/day) of rIL-4 induced appreciable inhibition of the growth of both tumors after a dose-response survival curve peaking at 0.1 pg/day. Inasmuch as rIL-4 has no direct antitumor activity, as shown by in vitro tests, host immune reactivity plays a fundamental role in this lymphokine activated tumor inhibition (LATI). LATI, in fact, is abolished when recipient mice are sublethally irradiated or treated with cyclosporin A, or when the reactivity of CD4+ lymphocytes is suppressed, whereas it is not affected by anti-asialo GM1 antibody. The morphologic data show that rIL-4 LATI rests on the recruitment of several cell reaction mechanisms, among which those that are nonspecific seem to predominate. rIL-4 LATI also leads to a state of long lasting and specific immune memory: the growth of a second contralateral tumor challenge is significantly impaired after LATI. This immune memory takes place after LATI of both the poorly immunogenic CE-2 fibrosarcoma and the TS/A adenocarcinoma, previously classed as nonimmunogenic on the basis of immunization-protection tests. In the latter case, adoptive transfer experiments show that Thy-1+ lymphocytes and, in particular, the CD4 cell-depleted T lymphocyte subpopulation, are responsible for the immune memory. Finally, the ability of rIL-4 to trigger LATI is greater than that of the most effective doses of rIL-2, rIL-1 beta, and IFN-gamma, whereas its association with rIL-1 beta induces a more effective immune memory.

[A new computerized method for quantitative occlusal analysis].

In this work the authors wanted to stress the importance of the occlusal analysis in the sphere of the dental clinic test considering the different methods. Moreover the characteristics of a new system computed for the remark of the occlusal contacts have been analysed with greater detail, debating advantages, limits and clinics applications.

[TMJ and radiographic methods. Comparative analysis].

The Authors take into consideration the complex and troublesome subject of instrumental radiological analysis applicable as a diagnostic aid in TMJ pathology. They therefore analyse, starting from their own experiences and after revising the pertaining literature, the pros and cons of the several radiological methodologies, both traditional and recently discovered as CAT and nuclear magnetic resonance. They do not only underline the possibilities and limits of the above mentioned methodologies, but ever define precisely how instrumental diagnostic techniques cannot, individually or variously combined, provide a complete diagnostic and aetiological view of the pathologies of TMJ without clinic information.
