[Aspects in the psychological development of children from the Maghreb].

Studies on the psychological development of the Maghreb child, from the psychomotor as well as the emotional points of view, are still quite rare, as is literature and research on the Maghreb child's family and environment. This article synthesizes various data, while identifying what is generally unknown or misunderstood about the Maghreb. This is namely the case of information surrounding the Islam faith. Also, by raising questions about the female child, the author examines one of today's major sociocultural and political problems in Islamic countries: the female citizen of tomorrow in a changing world--an issue which the author considers essential to any endeavour in the field of mental health.

[The psychiatrist and his questions in the face of traditional practices in Northwest Africa].

Traditional practices remain frequent in such countries as Maghrab. They interfer with care as well as with clinic, as made evident by some observations. Their weight, shown by many authors, possibly indicates the position of cultural changes of the group and underlines the importance of the pathology of filiation relationship. Nevertheless, meeting them should favour a reflection on the humanism of present society.

[Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Apropos of 8 cases, with one developing over a 13-year period].

The subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is one of the few child dementiae. An eight cases study is the opportunity of analysing the clinical, electrical and evolutive particularities of this very serious prognosis disease. The circumstantial comment of a thirteen-year-followed-case illustrates the clinical features, the electrical evolution, and the late C.T. scan aspects.

[Infant-juvenile psychiatry in Algeria (author's transl)].

Psychiatric problems of the child and the adolescent in Algeria are discussed in light of traditional psycho-social factors and in the modern world. The emphasis is on the frequency and severity of troubles of organic origin. Parallely, the impact of new aspects, coming from consequences of socio-cultural mutations, is understressed. This study underlines relationships between psychiatric aspects and socio-economical and cultural factors, and the role of the psychiatrist, with the heavy responsabilities he has to face in all areas if he wants to remain in his therapeutic role (Acta psychiat. belg., 1977, 77, 587-622).
