Experiments on the heat-induced salt balance changes in cow's milk.

The heat-induced changes in salt balance between the colloidal phase of milk and its serum were studied using an ultrafiltration technique. Milk permeate was isolated at the heating temperature by means of a hollow fibre ultrafiltration cartridge coupled with a stainless steel heat exchanger unit. The milk samples initially at 4 degrees C were heated to 20, 40, 60, 80 or 90 degrees C. Ca, P, Mg and citrate contents of the permeates were determined. The decreases in Ca and P were proportional to the increase in temperature. Smaller losses in Mg and citrate were observed. An initial sharp decrease in concentration occurred within the first seconds of holding time and was followed by a slower and smaller decrease. The possible occurrence of a two-stage mechanism for the heat-induced salt precipitation is discussed. The precipitation of dicalcium phosphate is believed to occur together with some tricalcium citrate precipitation.

The menopause viewed in relation to other life events--a study performed in Belgium.

In order to study the impact of the menopause and hysterectomy in relation to other life events, a study was carried out in Belgium in a random sample of 510 women over 18 yr of age. It was found that these 2 life events are not perceived as being important. Comparison of the findings with those of an earlier unpublished study performed by the International Health Foundation on the same subject indicates that there has been a decrease in the perceived severity of the 2 life events. This could mean that, in the intervening period, socioeconomic status and emotional problems have acquired greater importance, although the change in attitudes might also be partly explained by the fact that the respondents were younger.

Qualitative and quantitative odour discrimation by mitral cells as compared to anterior olfactory nucleus cells.

The responses to odour stimulation of 61 single mitral cells and of 64 single anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) units were simultaneously recorded from rabbits. The test battery consisted of 6 chemical stimuli delivered at two intensity levels corresponding to a hundred-fold difference in concentration. The odour discrimination reaches its best for the mitral cells stimulated weakly; it decreased somewhere when the same cells are stimulated strongly. At AON level the odour discrimination already limited in the case of weak stimuli, almost disappears for strong stimuli. Multidimensional analysis of the odour similarities, respectively in the olfactory bulb and the AON, reveals an unexpectedly high loading of the first axis with an intensity factor. Our results indicate that the discriminatory ability in the mitral cells and in the AON cells are respectively better and poorer than in the chemoreceptors.

[New procedure for protein spinning: the hydrodynamic process].

In this text, we describe a new protein spinning process called hydrodynamic process. Parameters which are related to production of fibers and which can influence diameter and texture are explained extensively. In this process, a spinning dope is extruded through a spinnerette in a moving coagulation bath in which the fibers are coagulated, stretched and carried.

A modified technique (using polyester tape) of skin surface biopsy. Its interest for the investigation of athlete's foot.

A technical modification of skin surface biopsy has been introduced by using plastic tape instead of glass as holder, mainly to investigate mycological infections of skin folds. Among various brands of plastic sheets, a polyester film (Melinex O UCB-SIDAC) has been demonstrated as the most suitable. A direct microscopic comparison has been made between our modified technique and conventional scraping as procedures for collecting material from interdigital spaces in 30 patients with bilateral athlete's foot. It has been shown that the skin surface biopsy gives a slightly greater number of positive results (presence of dermatophytes or Candida species) than the conventional scraping technique, although the difference between both techniques is not statistically significant at the 0-05 level (0-05 less than P less than 0-10). Some advantages of the modified skin surface biopsy are emphasized.
