[Acute appendicitis with foreign body].
An unusual presentation of acute appendicitis due to a foreign body is reported. The aetiology and physiopathology of appendicitis are discussed.

[Exploratory laparotomy under local anesthesia].
Diagnostic laparoscopy under local anaesthesia for acute pain in the right iliac fossa in an old man is reported. Exploring the abdominal cavity under local anaesthesia is an excellent method for establishing a diagnosis in doubtful abdominal pain presentation. This technically easy procedure may avoid up to 45% of unnecessary laparotomies and related complications.

Silastic ring vertical gastroplasty as treatment for morbid obesity: technique and results for 337 patients.
SRVG is an easy and efficient treatment for morbid obesity. It allows spectacular weight loss and by this increases notably the life expectancy. In our series of 337 patients, we have no operative mortality and a morbidity of 5.6%. A permanent multidisciplinary approach is necessary to obtain good results. A more important follow-up has to confirm these encouraging results.

Analysis of the surgical activity in an emergency department of a medium-sized Belgian hospital.
The author makes a descriptive analysis of the population and the pathology met from a surgical point of view in an emergency department of a medium-sized Belgian hospital (+/- 550 beds). The quality of health care is also analysed. Finally, the author makes several proposals to try solving the problem of a continuously enlarging workload due to a high percentage of non urgent calls at emergency departments in developed countries.
