Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (epithelioid haemangioma) occurring within multiple deep lymph nodes and presenting with weight loss and raised CA-125 levels.

We report a case of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (epithelioid haemangioma) involving multiple deep mediastinal, abdominal and intramammary lymph nodes in a 52-year-old woman with weight loss and raised CA-125 levels. The unusual clinical presentation with raised CA-125 levels and its occurrence within multiple deep visceral lymph nodes has never been reported in literature.

Explosive decomposition of ethylene oxide at elevated condition: effect of ignition energy, nitrogen dilution, and turbulence.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of explosive decomposition of ethylene oxide (EO) at fixed initial experimental parameters (T=100 degrees C, P=4 bar) in a 20-l sphere was conducted. Safety-related parameters, namely the maximum explosion pressure, the maximum rate of pressure rise, and the Kd values, were experimentally determined for pure ethylene oxide and ethylene oxide diluted with nitrogen. The influence of the ignition energy on the explosion parameters was also studied. All these dependencies are quantified in empirical formulas. Additionally, the effect of turbulence on explosive decomposition of ethylene oxide was investigated. In contrast to previous studies, it is found that turbulence significantly influences the explosion severity parameters, mostly the rate of pressure rise. Thermodynamic models are used to calculate the maximum explosion pressure of pure and of nitrogen-diluted ethylene oxide, at different initial temperatures. Soot formation was experimentally observed. Relation between the amounts of soot formed and the explosion pressure was experimentally observed and was calculated.

Effects of Social versus Musical Antecedents on Communication Responsiveness in Five Children with Developmental Disabilities.

The present study involved a comparison of social versus musical antecedents on communication responsiveness in five children with developmental disabilities. During the social antecedent condition, the teacher presented opportunities for the children to greet, name objects, and request materials. In the musical antecedent condition, these same opportunities were embedded within a music/singing activity. A reversal design was used to compare the percentage of opportunities with appropriate communication responses across the two conditions. For three of the five children, the musical antecedent condition was associated with higher percentages of appropriate communication responses. For the other two children, the two conditions were associated with approximately equal rates of appropriate communication. Across both conditions, appropriate responses were more likely during opportunities for greeting and requesting than during opportunities to name objects. The results suggest that embedding communication opportunities within a musical activity may lead to increased appropriate communication responses for some children with developmental disabilities.

Survey of abdominal ultrasound and diagnostic peritoneal lavage for suspected intra-abdominal injury following blunt trauma.

Over a 3 year period all severely injured blunt trauma patients who were investigated with abdominal ultrasound examinations (AUS) or diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL) to exclude intra-abdominal injury were evaluated. The ultrasound examinations were performed by radiologists in 220 severely injured patients (20 of whom also had DPL). The overall sensitivity and specificity of abdominal ultrasound were 82.7% and 99.5%, respectively. The sensitivity increased to 89.1% by repeat scanning. In comparison, 72 DPLs were performed in severely injured patients; the overall sensitivity and specificity of DPL were 82.8% and 97.2%, respectively. DPL resulted in more non-therapeutic laparotomies, 9/25 (36%) compared with 3/23 (13%) with AUS. Abdominal ultrasound is now the first line investigation at this centre for evaluation of possible intra-abdominal injury in injured patients.

Comparison of in vitro proliferative capacity of human periodontal ligament cells in juvenile and aged donors.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the in vitro proliferative capacity of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells from aged and juvenile donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flow-cytometric analysis of the cell cycle was used to compare the length of each cell cycle, and the ratio of the cells progressing through the cycles between four PDL cells from juvenile donors and four cells from aged donors. Then, replicative capacity of the PDL cells from three juvenile and three aged donors was compared by serial cultures. Finally, expression of c-fos was compared between cells proliferating and cells which had reached senescent. RESULTS: Flow-cytometric analysis of the cell cycle had revealed that although there were no differences in the length of each phase of the cell cycle, significant differences were found in the ratio of the cells entering from Gap I to DNA synthesis phase of the cell cycle (P < 0.025). Replicative capacity was much longer in two cells from juvenile donors (about 20 population doublings), while all cells from aged donors showed short dividing abilities (less than eight population doublings), hence entered senescent phases shortly. Additionally, no c-fos was detected in cells which had reached senescence upon stimulation with serum. CONCLUSIONS: It is generally believed that aged humans have an impaired wound healing ability. We believe that more fibrotic PDL tissues seen in aged humans might be the reason for this, and suggest that this phenomena might be due to the progressive accumulation of senescent cell populations.

Superovulation of beef heifers with Pergonal (HMG): A dose response trial.

A study was designed to establish a dose-response curve for Pergonal (Human Menopausal Gonadotrophin) and to compare its efficacy in inducing superovulation with commercial FSH-P. A recognized treatment schedule for HMG of two ampoules at 0, 12, 24 and 36 hours and one ampoule at 48, 60, 72, 84, 96 and 108 hours was considered to be our 100% effective dose level. Fifty mature cycling cross-bred beef heifers were superovulated on day 10 +/- 1 of their cycle. Treatment groups were HMG I (200% dose), HMG II (100% dose), HMG III )50% dose), HMG IV (25% dose) and FSH-P (total dose 32 mg). All groups received 500 ug of cloprostenol 72 hours after initiation of treatments. The heifers were observed for onset of estrus and inseminated at 12, 24 and 36 hours. All heifers were slaughtered on day 7 post-estrus and their reproductive tracts removed for processing. All heifers were bled once daily for progesterone estimation and four times daily for two days beginning 24 hours after cloprostenol injection, for luteinizing hormone and estradiol-17beta estimations. A dose response to HMG was demonstrated for number of corpora lutea and all classes of ova/embryos. HMG II (100% dose) closely approximated the optimum dose for superovulation. There was no significant difference between the HMG II group and the FSH-P group for mean number of transferable embryos. The 200% HMG dose did not increase the numbers of ovulations or ova recovered but did decrease the numbers of fertilized and transferable ova.
