Therapeutic efficacy of superactive charcoal in rats exposed to oral lethal doses of T-2 toxin.

Superactive charcoal, a compound known to complex with many toxins, was evaluated in this study for its effectiveness in preventing death in rats given an oral lethal dose of 8 mg/kg body weight of T-2 toxin. The median effective dose of oral superactive charcoal in preventing deaths in rats was 0.175 g/kg body weight. Concurrent use of cathartics, such as sorbitol, magnesium sulfate and sodium sulfate, to facilitate removal of the superactive charcoal:T-2 toxin complex formed in vivo did not enhance the survival rates of rats. One gram per kilogram body weight oral superactive charcoal enhanced survival times and survival rates in rats given 8 mg/kg of T-2 toxin as late as 3 hr after the T-2 toxin was administered. Some benefit in survival rate may be derived from giving the superactive charcoal as late as 5 hr after the T-2 toxin.

[Aerosol disinfection of airborne bacteria-investigations with the microthread technique (author's transl)].

Investigations were performed in order to examine the microthread technique for its usefulness for testing the efficacy of aerosolized disinfectants to bacteria in a simulated airborne state. In this technique fine spider threads are wound on a metal frame. The test bacteria are captured on these threads and can so be exposed to the disinfectant aerosoles. Under the used conditions all the tested disinfectants (formaldehyde, glutardialdehyde, beta-propiolactone, peracetic acid, Tegodor 73 and Lysoformin) had a good disinfectant effect. The disinfectants were used in concentrations which had proven to be necessary for the disinfection of surfaces. The handling of the spiders, the performance of the tests and the applicability of the method are discussed.

[Definition of the term "work with pathogenic microorganism" a problem of quality control in the food industry (author's transl)].

According to the Federal Communicable Disease Act a permission is required for work with pathogenic microorganisms. Current interpretations of these legal requirements, however, pose considerable problems. For example it is quite open whether the determination of total counts or sterility tests are to be considered as work with pathogenic organisms or not. In a recent article a prominent representative of the federal health authority has discussed some of the aspects of this topic Unfortunately no progress in defining the term "work with pathogenic microorganisms" has been achieved. Therefore it seemed necessary to come back to that issue. The discussion presented here shows that the wording of the Federal Communicable Disease Act implies a rather restrictive interpretation of these provisions. Total counts, sterility tests, microbial flora analysis and salmonella tests in food quality control should not be considered as work with pathogenic microorganisms at all. Because of the great importance of these legal provisions health authorities definitely should avoid vague interpretation. Instead, if necessary, proper amendment of the legislation should be considered.

Linkage-maps and their relations to linkage cluster procedures.

Methods of numerical taxonomy should provide a good representation of the relations of the objects and the structure of the groups. Besides dendograms, shade diagrams and minimum spanning trees, linkage-maps are suggested as a good additive tool to accomplish this representation. In this paper linkage-maps and similar technics are described, their relations to some generally known linkage cluster procedures are shown and their advantages are discussed. Their application is demonstrated using a small microbiological data set.

[Numerical taxonomic studies on enterobacteria of surface-water (author's transl)].

435 enterobacterial strains of surface-water were tested in 35 physiological characters and classified numerically by a single-linkage procedure. The relations of similarity are shown in a "Vernetzungsdiagramm" (connected graph, Fig. 1). Tab. 1 specifies the characters of the taxa, which were formed graphically. The following facts are the result of this taxonomic classification: 1. 32% of the Escherichia group are KCN-positive. In addition it was found that 60% of the E. coli isolated from the faeces of wild ducks were KCN-positive. 2. The type strains of the species Enterobacter aerogenes and Klebsiella aerogenes show a far reaching conformity in their physiological character. The splitting into two genera does not seem to be of significance any longer. 3. By reason of the "Vernetzungsdiagramm" and the table of characters (Tab. 1) we propose to regroup the genera Enterobacter and Erwinia. The genus Erwinia represented here by bacteria of the Herbicola-Lathyri-group is clearly divided into two groups. In the discussion we propose for Erwinia I the name of Enterobacter agglomerans and for Erwinia II the name of Enterobacter herbicola. 4. The taxa Kluyvera and Levinea are placed in the vicinity of Enterobacter cloacae and Erwinia II (Enterobacter herbicola), respectively.

[Taxonomic importance of fermentation balances of Enterobacteriaceae (author's transl)].

Fermentation balances have been studied on 66 strains from 9 taxa of Enterobacteriaceae. In addition, 6 strains of Aeromonas have been investigated. Among these fermentation balances, 7 types could be distinguished. It was shown, that the taxa of Enterobacteriaceae differed with respect to the balance types involved. This is true especially for VP-positive taxa. For example, Hafnia, the Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia group, Enterobacter cloacae and Erwinia are to some extend characterized by different balance types. The groups of Enterobacteriaceae with plain acid fermentation are apperently more homogenous with respect to fermentation balances. Balances are, however, not suited for classification, because no balance type turned out to be absolutely group specific. The fermentation balances of our strains of Aeromonas are closely related to the acid-type balances of Enterobacteriaceae. A numerical classification of the data showed, that this method is most potent in sorting multivariate data. A basic agreement of both techniques, the subjective and the numerical subdivision, was found. The first one, however, tends to overemphasize differences among the types. A comparison between the quantitative data of fermentation balances and the corresponding diagnostic tests (MR, VP, Gas) gives information on the reliabiity of the latter.

[Total count and bacterial flora of minced meat with special reference to enterobacteria and pseudomonads (author's transl)].

The bacterial flora of minced meat is dominated by Micrococcaceae. In addition lactobacilli, pseudomonads, and enterobacteria are present in high numbers. The most important groups of spoiled meat are lactobacilli and pseudomonads. Enterobacteria develop predominantly at higher spoilage temperatures (15 degrees C). A more detailed study was conducted on 1076 cultures of enterobacteria and 915 cultures of pseudomonads. The main groups of enterobacteria found on minced meat are Enterobacter liquefacines, Erwinia, Citrobacter and Klebsiella. In spoiled meat E. liquefaciens and Erwinia predominate. Basicly, however, the enterobacteria flora of fresh and spoiled meat is rather similar. The same applies to the pseudomonads flora which at a rate of 60-70% consists of Pseudomonads fragi. The total count of minced meat is subject to large variations.

[Pulley system isokinetic training in knee rehabilitation--initial results].

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of a knee rehabilitation program after knee surgery, based on an isokinetic pulley System (Moflex, Recotec/Bernina, Switzerland). METHOD: In this prospective study, 73 patients participated in a standardized rehabilitation program (ACL reconstruction, ACL/all: n = ;51; patellar tendon, ACL/P: n = 30; semitendinosus tendon, ACL/S: n = 21; arthroscopic meniscus resection: n = 22). The major aspect of the program was an isokinetic pulley system with an implemented, linearly working knee device. RESULTS: Isokinetic training with the used device affords strict monitor feed-back to avoid critical torque values. Concentric training strength and workload which were attained without relevant pain were increased by about 130% within a mean of 16 rehabilitation days. At the end of the rehabilitation program, the maximum concentric strength of the affected knee measured by a rotating isokinetic system (Cybex, Kaphingst, Lahntal) increased by about 69% and amounted to about 90% of that of the unaffected knee. CONCLUSION: These first results demonstrate the value of the isokinetic pulley system in the rehabilitation after knee surgery as described above. The equipment may be used already in an early postoperative stage by the use of a passive or active-assistive mode. First results of strength increases using an isokinetic pulley system in knee rehabilitation are presented.

[Normal values of the shoulder strength in dependency on age and gender--comparison with the constant, UCLA, ASES scores and SF36 health survey].

AIM: The purpose of this study was to establish normal strength values of shoulder abduction in a male and female population aged between 6 to 90 years. These values were compared to the sex- and age-related values given by Constant for an Irish population, referred to as Constant 1991. Further strength values resulting from fixation of the measuring device at the deltoid insertion or at the wrist were compared. The assessment and comparison of shoulder function using different shoulder scores (Constant, UCLA, ASES) and the SF-36 was another aim of this study. METHOD: 120 male and 120 female probands were examined. For interpretation age- and sex-related groups of 20 probands each were used (group 1: 6 - 15 years; group 2: 16 - 30 years; group 3: 31 - 45 years; group 4: 46 - 60 years; group 5: 60 - 70 years, group 6: 71 - 90 years). Subjective and objective clinical parameters were registered, shoulder abduction strength was obtained using an isometric measuring device with fixation points at the deltoid insertion and at the wrist and the respective torque values were calculated. The shoulder function was quantified using Constant, UCLA and ASES scores. With the exception of group 1, the quality of life was measured with the SF-36 health-status questionnaire. RESULTS: Normal values of the shoulder abduction strength and valuation according to the Constant score are given for a German reference group related to age and gender. In addition to the Constant score more values for children are given. Strength values measured at the deltoid insertion (fixation point 1, FP1) and wrist (fixation point 2, FP2) are in a linear relation. Thus FP1 = 2.5 x FP2 and FP2 = 0.4 x FP1. If torque values instead of strength are used, 25 points correspond to 50 Nm. Total score values calculated by the use of the Constant score (methods published 1991) were markedly higher in groups 3 - 6 related to the values of Constant in the Irish population; the main reason is the higher abduction strength in our population. There exists a good relation between the Constant, UCLA and ASES scores (Constant 1991). The results of the SF-36 health survey were similar to the results of Bullinger et al. 1996. CONCLUSION: The normal values of C. R. Constant of an Irish population differ in part to those of our groups due to the different strength values. Our values may be more representative for German patients. The linear regression between strength values measured at a fixation point at the deltoid insertion or the wrist facilitates the calculation of each point from the other. This allows a comparison of the results of studies with different fixation points. The additional calculation of the torque allows a comparison of different studies independently of the fixation point of the strength measuring device.
