Application of pattern recognition methodology to the design of an electronic aid for coordination therapy.

Automated aids for developing coordination skills in the handicapped are not common, with the result that therapy of such a nature tends to be highly teacher intensive. This paper describes an electronic aid, based on pattern recognition techniques, for the teaching of writing and drawing skills which, while retaining the flexibility to allow tailoring of its operation to the needs of individual patients and applicability to a variety of tasks, is sufficiently cheap and convenient in implementation to be an effective tool of general acceptability.

Adult

A hierarchically-structured model of information processing in neural networks.

In order to describe the information processing mechanisms of a neural system a basic building block (sub-network), consisting of a group of interacting neural elements, is introduced. By interconnecting such units to give an integrated structure, a hierarchically-organised processing chain is formed. The properties of such a system are shown to provide a logical description of information processing which links high level events with underlying neural mechanisms.

Brain

Computer-based testing system for experiments in visual perception.

This paper discusses the increasing scope for the application of computing systems to the investigation of problems in the field of visual perception. A simple language for the generation of various perceptual testing schemes is described and some examples of possible applications are given.

Diagnosis, Computer-Assisted

Mechanisms of memory in learning automata.

If neural activity is modelled within an automaton framework, neural processes may be conveniently described in terms of state trajectories. Mechanisms of memory are investigated in such a model and it is shown how short-term and long-term storage may be explained in terms of simple and interrelated feedback configurations.

Memory

An electronic aid for teaching writing and drawing skills.

Conventional methods for the teaching of writing and drawing skills among the handicapped are highly teacher-intensive. This paper describes an electronic drawing aid which, after an initial teaching session, may be used by an unsupervised patient to develop his drawing and writing capabilities. A major feature of the system is its flexibility in that its performance may be tailored to the needs of any particular patient, in terms of both the degree of complexity of a required drawing and in the level of ability required by the patient to reach a desired level of attainment.

Aptitude

Computer-assisted analysis of the echocardiogram in the clinical environment.

Ultrasound imaging of the heart can provide an important source of diagnostic data to the cardiologist, but conventional echocardiography requires considerable expertise, and is extremely time-consuming. Computer-based analysis is therefore very attractive and, in the light of decreasing hardware costs in recent years, has become increasingly viable in practice. This paper describes the specification and implementation of a computer-based tool which supports the clinician in the analysis of echocardiograms, exploiting the clinical judgement and inherent skill of the clinician. The design of the system has focused particularly on the provision of a powerful user interface for ease of interaction, flexibility in system functionality, and extensive interactive capabilities to maximize reliability and convenience of use. This paper will describe the principal features of the system and illustrate its use in the clinical environment.
