Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the right side of the aortic valve in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

This study describes the coronary artery distribution patterns associated with the anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the right side of the aortic valve in Syrian hamsters. The hearts of 15 affected animals were examined by means of a corrosion-cast technique, histology and scanning electron microscopy. The hamsters belonged to a laboratory inbred colony with a high incidence of coronary artery anomalies and bicuspid aortic valves. The aortic valve was tricuspid in eight hamsters and bicuspid in the other seven. In all cases, the right coronary artery was normal, whereas the left main coronary artery trunk arose from the right aortic sinus or from the right side of the ventral aortic sinus when the aortic valve was bicuspid. In 12 specimens, the left main trunk crossed the infundibular septum and then divided into the left circumflex branch and the obtuse marginal branch. In another specimen, the course of the left main trunk was ventral to the right ventricular outflow tract; in the remaining two, it surrounded the aorta dorsally. In man, some of these distribution patterns may cause myocardial ischaemia and sudden death. The present findings prove that the origin of the left coronary artery from the right aortic sinus occurs in primitive mammals such as the Syrian hamster, suggesting that the defect may occur in other mammalian species. Its possible occurrence should be borne in mind in domestic animals, especially in those with signs of myocardial ischaemia after strenuous activity.

Evaluation of patients referred for lung transplantation: fourteen years experience.

We present a descriptive study of patients referred as candidates for lung transplantation in the last 14 years. The 837 requests were evaluated stepwise in three phases: phase I, derivation report; phase II, outpatient evaluation; and phase III, inpatient evaluation. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was the most common reason for referral (31%). Cystic fibrosis was the referral disease with the best transplanted/referred relation (57%) and pulmonary fibrosis was the disease that had the highest mortality (39.7% of all deaths). Forty-three percent of all patients reached phase III and 29% were transplanted. Mortality on the waiting list was 3.7%. The most important causes of exclusion were inadequate indications and the presence of severe associated diseases. The mean study was 44 days. Knowledge of the natural history, local factors that influence organ availability, expected time on the waiting list, and disease progression allow optimization of this therapeutic option.

Stochastic model to forecast ground-level ozone concentration at urban and rural areas.

Stochastic models that estimate the ground-level ozone concentrations in air at an urban and rural sampling points in South-eastern Spain have been developed. Studies of temporal series of data, spectral analyses of temporal series and ARIMA models have been used. The ARIMA model (1,0,0) x (1,0,1)24 satisfactorily predicts hourly ozone concentrations in the urban area. The ARIMA (2,1,1) x (0,1,1)24 has been developed for the rural area. In both sampling points, predictions of hourly ozone concentrations agree reasonably well with measured values. However, the prediction of hourly ozone concentrations in the rural point appears to be better than that of the urban point. The performance of ARIMA models suggests that this kind of modelling can be suitable for ozone concentrations forecasting.

Formation of cartilage in congenital bicuspid aortic valves of Syrian hamsters (mesocricetus auratus).

The formation, topographical location and calcification of cartilage in congenital bicuspid aortic valves of 235 Syrian hamsters aged 0--173 days were studied by histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. In all animals the aortic valve was bicuspid; it had two leaflets, ventral and dorsal, each supported by its own aortic sinus. In 141 valves, a more or less developed raphe was located in the ventral sinus. The remaining 94 valves were devoid of any raphe. The first sign of valvular chondrogenesis was the presence of small groups of cells embedded in a type II collagen-positive extracellular matrix. These cellular groups, which appeared as early as 2 days after birth, became converted into hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage. A considerable proportion (67%) of the valvular cartilages developed within the first 6 weeks of life. The cartilaginous tissue was capable of forming anywhere along the attachments of the valve leaflets to their supporting sinuses. However, statistical analyses substantiated the observation that the bases of the sinuses and raphes were the valvular regions particularly prone to the development of cartilage. At these sites, the cartilage was usually hyaline and often became calcified. The findings were consistent with the assumption that intense mechanical stimulation plays an important role in the formation of the valvular cartilage. Moreover, these findings supplied new evidence that in the cardiac semilunar valves of Syrian hamsters, cartilage formation does not involve the aggregation of large numbers of cells before their differentiation into chondrocytes. The valvular hyaline cartilages appear to act as competent pivots, resisting mechanical tensions generated during the cardiac cycle. Deposition of calcium in the matrix can be regarded as a reinforcement process of the cartilaginous tissue. Finally, it is hypothesized that the formation of cartilage in the aortic valves of hamsters prevents dystrophic calcification of the valve, a pathological change that causes aortic stenosis in man, especially in patients with a bicuspid aortic valve.

Analyses of ozone in urban and rural sites in Málaga (Spain).

Ozone concentrations were measured at two (urban and a rural) sites near the city of Málaga (Spain). The aim of this study was to determine the daily, monthly and seasonal variation patterns of ozone concentrations at both sites and to study the possible regional influences. The daily variations mostly have the usual features with the afternoon maximum and the night minimum being more pronounced in the urban area. The average monthly concentrations throughout the year start to increase in March reaching their maximum values in July for the urban site. However, in the rural area, the monthly variations are smaller reaching their maximum value in June. The hourly evolution of the ozone concentrations in both sampling sites is well defined in spring and summer and not so well defined in autumn and winter. Taking into account the four seasons, the rural concentrations are higher than the urban ones. Summer is the season when there are similar concentrations at both sampling sites. Average hourly summer afternoon ozone for the hours 12:00-20:00 LST exceeded the 110 microg m(-3) European Union guidelines for human health for 8 h ozone exposure at the urban and rural sites.

Formation of cartilage in aortic valves of Syrian hamsters.

The formation of cartilage in aortic valves of Syrian hamsters was studied using histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. The sample consisted of 281 specimens aged 0-363 days, all of which had a normal (tricuspid) aortic valve. The first sign of valvular chondrogenesis is the presence of small groups of cells embedded in a type II collagen-positive matrix. These groups of cells, which can appear as early as one day after birth, increase in size and differentiate into hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage. From the fourth day of life, all hamsters examined displayed cartilaginous foci in the aortic valve. They were located along the fibrous attachments of the valve leaflets to their respective sinuses, including the valve commissures. A considerable proportion (76%) of cartilages formed within the first 40 days of life, that is during the period of time in which the histogenesis of the valve takes place. The present observations are consistent with the assumption that in mammals, the precursors of the aortic valve chondrocytes are neural crest-derived cells. Results of a statistical analysis substantiate that the incidence is significantly higher in (1) the territory that comprises the collagenous condensation of the ventral commissure and the ventro-lateral and proximal fibrous attachments of the right leaflet to its sinus, and (2) the proximal fibrous attachment of dorsal leaflet to its sinus. These findings together with data in the literature concerning the distribution of stress in each leaflet-sinus assembly of the valve during the cardiac cycle, suggest that mechanical action might play an inductive role in the formation of the cartilaginous tissue in the aortic valve of mammals. In addition, they point to the possibility that locally intense mechanical stimulation is responsible for the differentiation of the anticipated cartilaginous tissue into hyaline cartilage.

Behavior of storage lipids during development and germination of olive ( Olea europaea L.) pollen.

The presence of abundant oil bodies in the mature olive pollen grain has led us to focus on the behavior of these lipid bodies during pollen development and in vitro pollen germination. The appearance, increase, and accumulation of lipid bodies have been determined by following the sequential development of the pollen grain. Semithin slices of anthers and pollen grains were stained with Sudan Black B in order to identify neutral lipids. Ultrastructural studies were also carried out. Our results show a notable increase in lipid bodies between the young-pollen-grain stage and the mature-pollen-grain stage. Substantial polarization of lipid bodies was observed after 1 or 2 h of pollen incubation in germination medium. During pollen tube growth, the lipid bodies are located near the germinative aperture after 3 h of incubation, as well as inside the pollen tube, thus suggesting that the lipid bodies move from the pollen grain to the pollen tube. After 7 h of germination the presence of lipid bodies inside the pollen tube is no longer substantial. Our results support the idea that lipid bodies are involved in pollen germination, stigma penetration, and pollen tube growth. These results are discussed in connection with their implications for the pollen germination process.

Sediment accumulation rate and radiological characterisation of the sediment of Palmones River estuary (southern of Spain).

Chemical analyses and radioecological methods were combined in order to estimate the sediment accumulation rate in the upper 20 cm depth of the Palmones River estuary. Organic matter, total carbon, C:N and (137)Cs vertical profiles showed changes at 13 cm depth. These changes could be associated with the decrease in river input since 1987 when a dam situated in the upper part of the estuary started to store water. Using 1987 as reference to date the sediment, accumulation rate was 1.2 cm yr(-1). As alternative method, two layer model of (210)Pb(xs) vertical distribution showed a sedimentation rate of 0.7 cm yr(-1) with a surface mixing layer of 7 cm thickness. The high ammonium, potassium and sodium content in pore water and the strong correlation between (137)Cs activities and organic matter in dry sediment suggests that (137)Cs (the only anthropogenic product detected) is mainly accumulated in the estuary associated with the particulate organic material from the catchment area.

Assessment of ozone variations and meteorological effects in an urban area in the Mediterranean Coast.

Ozone concentrations are valuable indicators of possible health and environmental impacts. However, they are also used to monitor changes and trends in the sources of both ozone and its precursors. For this purpose, the influence of meteorological variables is a confusing factor. This study presents an analysis of a year of ozone concentrations measured in a coastal Spanish city. Firstly, the aim of this study was to perceive the daily, monthly and seasonal variation patterns of ozone concentrations. Diurnal cycles are presented by season and the fit of the data to a normal distribution is tested. In order to assess ozone behaviour under temperate weather conditions, local meteorological variables (wind direction and speed, temperature, relative humidity, pressure and rainfall) were monitored together with ozone concentrations. The main relationships we could observe in these analyses were then used to obtain a regression equation linking diurnal ozone concentrations in summer with meteorological parameters.

[Tetrabamate-induced hepatotoxicity. Report of seven cases and literature review].

OBJECTIVES: Analysis of all cases of tetrabamate (Atrium)-induced hepatotoxicity reported in the Andalusian Registry of drug-induced liver disorders and comparison with cases reported in the literature. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Information was gathered in a structured protocol. The causal role of tetrabamate was estimated in each case using the diagnostic scale of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS). RESULTS: Of 327 cases of hepatotoxicity, 7 (2%) were due to tetrabamate. The mean age was 57 years (4 men). In 57% of the cases, the presenting symptom was tremor. The latency period was between 15 and 730 days. Liver damage was mainly cytolytic without signs of hypersensitivity. In all cases outcome was favorable with complete recovery between 60 and 120 days. The CIOMS diagnostic scale rated a causal role of tetrabamate as highly probable in six cases and as probable in one. CONCLUSION: Tetrabamate can induce hepatotoxicity, probably due to an idiosyncratic metabolic mechanism. Because of this finding and the existence of more appropriate therapeutic alternatives, tetrabamate should not be used in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal.

[Crouzon's syndrome with acanthosis nigricans].

Crouzon's syndrome is a complex craniosynostosis disorder due to mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) type 2. We report a female patient with Crouzon's syndrome associated with acanthosis nigricans. The molecular abnormality in this patient is a point mutation (Ala391Glu) in the transmembrane domain of another FGFR (type 3), which is very close to the mutation (Gly380Arg) most frequently observed in achondroplasia. Acanthosis nigricans is an emerging disorder. Its clinical features and molecular findings differ from those of isolated Crouzon's syndrome. These data are very useful when molecular tests are required for prenatal diagnosis.

Cartilage in pulmonary valves of Syrian hamsters.

The presence of cartilage in the pulmonary valve has been reported in birds, but not in mammals. We describe here the occurrence of cartilaginous tissue in the pulmonary valves of 40 (11.4%) of 351 Syrian hamsters examined using histological, histochemical and/or immunohistochemical techniques. The cartilaginous deposits were located along the fibrous attachments of the valve leaflets to the wall of the pulmonary artery trunk. Our findings indicate that the proximal attachments of the leaflets to their respective sinuses, and especially that of the ventral leaflet, are the most prone valvular regions to develop cartilaginous foci. Nonetheless, the possible function of these foci remains an open question. Formation of cartilage in the pulmonary valve starts within the first month of life, that is during the period in which the valve reaches histological maturation. The earliest evidence of chondrogenesis is the presence of small groups of cells embedded in a type II collagen-positive extracellular matrix. These groups of cells, which can appear as early as one day after birth, increase moderately in size and differentiate into hyaline cartilaginous tissue. The precursors of the cartilaginous cells are presumed to be neural crest-derived elements. However, the factor or factors involved in the differentiation of these precursors into chondrocytes are still unknown. In this regard, our observations cast doubt on the hypothesis that the formation of cardiac cartilages is primarily due to locally intense mechanical stimulation.

Gross-alpha and gross-beta activities in airborne particulate samples. Analysis and prediction models.

Measurements of gross-alpha and gross-beta activities were made every week during the years 1992-1997 for airborne particulate samples collected using air filters at a clear site. The data are sufficiently numerous to allow the examination of variations in time and by these measurements to establish several features that should be important in understanding any trends of atmospheric radioactivity. Two models were used to predict the gross-alpha and gross-beta activities. A good agreement between the results of these models and the measurements was highlighted.

High-dose loratadine exposure in a six-year-old child.

Loratadine is a long-acting antihistamine indicated for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria in patients 6 years of age and older. The literature contains little information on high-dose loratadine exposures; as a consequence, poison centers are unsure of the loratadine dose that can be managed with observation and the dose that requires treatment. We report an intentional ingestion of 300 mg loratadine by a 6-y-old child that resulted in minor elevation of blood pressure and heart rate when managed with supportive care only. Further studies and case series are needed before a minimum toxic dose can be established.

Flutamide-induced hepatotoxicity: report of a case series.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the characteristics of flutamide induced hepatotoxicity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective study we have analyzed all cases of flutamide hepatotoxicity submitted to the Andalucian Registry of drug-induced liver disease. Data were collected using a structured reporting form. Causality assessment was performed using two clinical scales: the standard CIOMS scale and the recently developed María and Victorino scale. RESULTS: Nine of 185 patients (4.9%) were identified. In 8 male patients, mean age 75 years (range 65-83), flutamide was indicated for palliative therapy of disseminated prostatic carcinoma, and in one young female (14 years) was given for the treatment of facial hirsutism. The mean duration of the flutamide therapy was 151 days (range 4-443). All patients presented with overt liver injury, the most frequent features being asthenia, anorexia, weight loss, nausea, vomiting and jaundice. No patient showed hypersensitivity features. In two patients (22%) the hepatic damage evolved to fulminant liver failure, one of them undergoing a liver transplantation and the other subsequently died. An additional patient died of a non-hepatic related cause when his liver function was improving. Causality assessment by the two clinical scales did not exclude any case, but the two patients who died where classified as unlikely by the María and Victorino scale. CONCLUSIONS: Flutamide can induce severe acute hepatitis, probably due to an idiosyncratic metabolic mechanism. Liver tests monitoring should probably be mandatory during the first months of flutamide therapy and the drug withdrawn if transaminases began to increase.

The development and validation of Spanish versions of the State and Trait Food Cravings Questionnaires.

OBJECTIVE: We developed and tested the psychometric properties of Spanish versions of the Trait and State Food Cravings Questionnaires (FCQ-T and FCQ-S respectively). METHOD: The instruments were translated and adapted to Spanish and administered to undergraduate students from a Southern university in Spain (N = 271). The data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis to compare the factor structure of the English and Spanish versions of both questionnaires. RESULTS: The factors structure of both questionnaires obtained excellent fit indices across their Spanish versions with the one exception that some factors of the FCQ-S were more highly intercorrelated among the Spanish sample than the American. DISCUSSION: This study supports the conceptualization of food cravings as universal multidimensional motivational states that can be reliably measured and supports the use of the Spanish versions of the FCQ.
