[Analysis of activities of the preventive dentistry service in the Health Area 8 of the Valencia Autonomous Region].

OBJECTIVES: We describe and analize the activities we carried out in a surgery from a preventive dentistry unit. DESIGN: Longitudinal descriptive study from 1993 since 1994. SETTING: Health Area 8 from the Valencian Autonomous Region. PARTICIPANTS: Children from 3 to 14 year-old attendant to the preventive dentistry unit's surgery (2.497). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: We visited 5.012 children. The highest percentage of population corresponded to the zona 4, where began at first the preventive service. The activities distribution was as follow: oral explorations and plaque control (100%), fluoride topic aplication (90.38%), diet control (36.81%), pit and fisure sealants (6.46%), profilaxis (8.71%), radiological diagnosis (6.46%), dental emergencies (2.17%). The users origin was: 38.88% school oral explorations made over 6- and 10-year-old children; 63.71% from self-request; and 16.45% sent by other health professionals. 41.42% were continuated visits. CONCLUSIONS: Demand of preventive dental services is very high in our health area, although incorporation of therapeutic techniques is wished by the population. This demand increase as well as the surgery is closer to the user. People from big cities are stubborn using these services from smallest villages, even having transport facilities. Children start coming to the consults between 5-6 year-old, keeping an acceptable control until 12 approximately.

Clinical study of a halogen light-activated bleaching agent in nonvital teeth: case reports.

Clinical experience with an innovative, dual-action, in-office bleaching regimen that has both chemical and photoactivated mechanisms is described. This internal bleaching procedure was performed in three patients, each with different characteristics. In general, the results obtained were satisfactory. In the 6-month period of follow-up, no adverse effects related to the application of the bleaching agent were found. The different factors that may have influenced the results achieved are discussed.

Composite resin inlays: a study of marginal adaptation.

Ten mesio-occlusodistal composite resin inlays were fabricated by the indirect method and cemented in extracted posterior teeth. The restorations were subjected to thermocycling and subsequently placed in a 50% silver nitrate solution. Specimens were prepared and inspected under a stereoscopic microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The results showed a total absence of microleakage at the margins terminating in enamel and a slight degree of microleakage in only two margins terminating in cementum. This corresponded with the general absence of defects and gaps that was observed in the scanning electron microscope. The exception was in the two specimens that exhibited dye penetration; these were found to have material in the marginal areas.

[Transverse epidemiological study of caries in a rural child population in Cuenca].

We have explored a school-children population (6-7 years old--1st of EGB--) in the Health Area of Motilla del Palancar (Cuenca). In these early age, 20% of the children show dental caries in permanent teeth; plaque index by Quigley-Hein is 2.00, finding that plaque index is superior in permanent teeth than temporary teeth. We detect cariogenic dietetic habits. Desired minimum oral hygiene level (one tooth-brush a day) appeared in 23.5% of the examined population.

[The effect of 2 bleaching agents on the enamel surface. An in-vitro study].

We present a study "in vitro" of the effect of bleaching agents on dental surfaces using the "Walking bleaching technique". We found that hydrogen peroxide bleached more quickly than carbamide although, after a period of six weeks, the results were the same as far as whitening was concerned. In the scanning electron microscope we observed significantly different changes in each case. Carbamide caused a regular and uniform opening of the enamel prisms of the surface while hydrogen peroxide produced more severe superficial destruction with the appearance of patterning similar to the acid etching, and the presence of some crystalline areas emerging from the body of the prisms.

[Caries indices in a Valencia school population].

We made a transversal epidemiologic survey in a group of 1065 school-children between 3 and 15 years old from the metropolitan area of Valencia (Spain). We determined caries prevalence in this population with caries index for permanent and deciduous dentition: DMF-T, DMF-S, df-t, df-s. Also we show their age and sex distribution.
