This is a report of Balo's concentric sclerosis in a 23-year-old Filipino male, who presented behavioral abnormalities, gait disturbance, double incontinence and generalized paratonia with the entire course of a six-month duration. A review of literature on this rare form of demyelinating disease is discussed.
Forty-two myasthenic patients received a total of 7.6 to 130 gm of cyclophosphamide over 2 to 37 months; 33 received prednisone concomitantly. Twenty-five (60%) are presently asympatomatic. Seventy-four percent improved after 1 month of therapy. Fifty-eight percent of those treated for a year, 86% of those treated for 2 years, and 100% of those treated for 32 months were asymptomatic. Based on our definition of remission (asymptomatic for at least 6 months without medication), 12 of the 16 patients (75%) followed for at least 18 months were in remission. Cyclophosphamide may have more specific therapeutic effects than other immunosuppressive drugs used to treat myasthenia.

The relationship between quantitative splenic uptake of sulfur colloid and immunoglobulin M level in serum was studied in 15 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Splenic function correlated positively with IgM level (r = 0.58, p = 0.02) and inversely with antibody titre to n-DNA (r = -0.74, p = 0.003), and was reduced (p greater than 0.001) in patients with depressed IgM levels. IgM level in serum may be a useful correlate of splenic phagocytic function in SLE patients.
