[The low-birthweight child: everyday care given within the family context].

The aim of this study was to know the care given to low birth weight newborns and the cultural context in which it occurs. The method used to gather information was participant observation and interviews of the mothers of these babies in the district they live in Porto Alegre. Through ethnographic analysis with the construction of cultural domains, according to Spradley, the study wishes to document the child care and the relations between the mothers and the professionals of health care institutions. The cultural findings point out that there is a need to discuss the practice of perinatal care, especially to low birth weight newborns and also include cultural aspects into this care.

[Educational program for HIV/AIDS prevention].

The objective of this study is the evaluation of an educative program intended to bring scientific knowledge to common sense persons about HIV/AIDS prevention. A participative study was carried out with clients of a health center. To the development of the program, an educative game was used. It had 30 cards with verbal and non-verbal messages about the topic. The discussion about those messages were observed and recorded. The analysis of the data made possible the elaboration of themes categories: "men, women and preservative", "beliefs, attitudes, feelings and behavior", "pursuing meaning of life", "media and HIV/IDS". The evaluation of the program by the participants shows attainment to its objectives. The game was considered excellent to start the discussion about the topic and a good educational tool, in which knowledge raises freely from the encounter of scientific and common sense perspectives.

[Production of scientific papers by nurses from public and private hospitals in the district of Sao Paulo].

This study shows the nurse's scientific publication from seven public and six private hospitals in São Paulo city, from january/1989 to june/1995. From a total of 486 papers identified, 242 were published as abstracts, 124 in annals, 92 in nationals and international journals, 21 as book chapters and 7 as books in nursing. The facilities and difficulties in publishing nursing scientific production were also discussed.

[Nurses' uniforms as seen by patients, nurses and nursing faculty].

The exact role of the way people dress up on the nonverbal communication is still unknown. Nevertheless, we know that it influences the interpersonal answers and, in some situations, they are the main determinants of those answers. The objective of this study was to determinate differences between the perception os the nurse uniform through the answers of 100 patients, 30 nurses and 15 nursing school faculty. The data were collected by showing nine photographs of hospitals of the city of São Paulo (Brazil). White trousers and blouse was the favorite one among patients, nurses and nursing school faculty regarding personal care. White skirt above knees, white blouse and blazer was the most rejected one by three groups.

[Playing and learning nurse-patient communication].

The author present an educative game to teach nurse-patient communication. The game was tested by graduate students and utilized by the undergraduate students. Those students, judges and the Author considered this game efficient and adequate to the teaching of the topic under study.

[The nurse in mental health outpatient clinics].

This study emerged from the preoccupation to evaluate the learning needs of psychiatric nurses working in an ambulatory of Mental Health. We verified the type of education they had, the actions they performed and the difficulties and facilities they found in the development of nursing interventions. It was also examined whether these actions are in conformity to the ones prerecognized by the literature or not. The data analysis showed that the majority of the actions are performed by nurses in distinct manners in 6 ambulatories. We perceived, in some events, the "function deviation" in nursing activities of nurse and the nursing team.
