Partial exchange transfusion as treatment for hemoglobin SC disease in pregnancy.

Serious infarctions and embolic events can complicate the course of pregnant patients with hemoglobin SC disease. In two cases, partial exchange transfusion preceded recovery in severely ill pregnant women with hemoglobin SC disease. There seem to be pathophysiological correlations for the observed clinical findings, and there are potential beneficial effects of partial exchange transfusion. Based on our experience, partial exchange transfusion should be considered as a means of reversing the often fatal complications attending hemoglobin SC disease and pregnancy. The exchange should be of sufficient volume to ensure a postexchange level of hemoglobin A of at least 30%.

OSHA response to occupational health personnel needs and resources.

Because of the nonavailability of sufficient numbers of qualified industrial hygienists to assume roles as health compliance officers in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a three - year career development program for trainee industrial hygienists has been initiated. The present and projected personnel needs in the occupational health field in the U.S. are presented, together with a general description of the OSHA career development program. The program is a response to current needs; it will be curtailed when university graduates are available to meet Agency needs.

Influence of legal standards on the practice of industrial hygiene.

Prescriptive standards for the work environment affect the professional practice of industrial hygiene. Among the advantages are: legal requirements reinforce professional recommendations; penalties encourage abatement of hazards; compliance should ensure a safe and healthful environment; recordkeeping requirements will provide a basis for future action. Among the disadvantages are: rigid evaluation procedures, reporting format, etc., discourage professional judgment and development of new methods; professional reports become legal documents; single standards do not focus on the total environment.

The effects of milling on diameters and lengths of fibrous glass and chrysotile asbestos fibers.

An investigation on the ffects of milling on diameters and lengths of fibrous glass and chrysotile asbestos was performed. A wool type fibrous glass and chrysotile asbestos were ball milled, one at a time, for selected periods of time. After each milling time a sample was taken by using a special technique to obtain representative samples. The samples from all milling times were analyzed by phase contrast microscopy with a Zeiss phase contrast objective at a total magnification of 625 X. Selected samples were observed and photographed in a Phillips EM 200 electron miscroscope. The results of examination by phase contrast microscopy showed that milling had no significant effect on diameters of fibrous glass fibers, but reduced the lengths of these fibers and reduced both diameters and lengths of chrysotile asbestos...
