The relationship between caregiver burden and self-care deficits in former rehabilitation patients.

This study examined the relationship between caregiver burden and self-care deficit in former rehabilitation patients. We hypothesized that as self-care deficit increases, so does the level of caregiver burden. We employed Spearman correlational analysis and stepwise multiple regression analyses; the mean caregiver burden score was 25.9 (SD = 17.1), indicating mild to moderate burden. Caregiver burden was significantly correlated with social cognition deficit (r = 0.438, p = .001), communication deficit (r = 0.430, p = .001), and self-care deficit (r = .426, p = .002). Significant predictors of burden were social cognition deficit (beta = .408, p = .0018), self-care deficit (beta = .322, p = .0100), and caregiver age (beta = .369, p = .0312).

Reuse of disposable syringe-needle units in the diabetic patient.

A comparison was made between reuse of plastic disposable needle-syringe units and glass syringes with daily new needles in diabetic patients who take daily insulin injections. Parameters studied were incidence of infection, clarity of syringe readings, ability to use syringe, and sharpness of needle. The plastic disposable units could be reused with safety and patient satisfaction by most patients for at least 3 days. Considerable cost benefit could accrue if disposable units were used more than one time for insulin injections.

Working with the elderly: do student nurses care for it?

This study investigates neophyte student nurses' attitudes to working with the elderly through placing them in relation to attitudes to other nursing career options and by exploring student nurses' reasons for such attitudes. The results are based on a questionnaire answered by 610 students from five NSW teaching institutions. The results indicate that nurses rate working with the elderly very poorly, and that this negativity is based on unfavourable stereotypes of aged persons and their care. These findings are placed in the context of projected demographic changes and the pressures these will place on the health care system and its need for nurses qualified in this area of work.

Working with one's own family: another path for professional development.

Unresolved issues related to the clinician-teacher's family of origin can interfere with working with families and teaching about family systems. For the past three years the author has been working on his own family issues through family therapy training, which challenged him to better differentiate from his family of origin. The therapy model, Bowen Family Systems Theory, asserts that personal changes are best made by altering emotion-based behavior patterns derived from prior generations of the family. Beginning to deal with personal family issues has helped the author teach residents and medical students more effectively and work better with patients and their families.
