Mycoflora and potential for mycotoxin production of freshly harvested black bean from the Argentinean main production area.

A mycological survey was carried out, for the first time, on black bean samples from the northwestern Argentinean province of Salta in the 1999 harvest season. Ten varieties of black beans were evaluated at three locations. Species of the genus Alternaria were the most prevalent component of the black bean mycoflora. Species of Fusarium, Sclerotinia, Rhizoctonia and Acremonium were also recorded. The predominant species of the genera isolated were Alternaria alternata, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium semitectum and Acremonium strictum. An analysis of variance was applied to determine possible differences between black bean varieties. Variety FT88/519 was the most susceptible to Sclerotinia sclerotinia infection, while the variety DOR 604 was the least susceptible. As toxigenic species were recovered, Alternaria toxins, zearalenone and trichothecenes may pose a contamination risk for black bean.

On-line predictive inferences in reading: processing time during versus after the priming context.

Prior research suggests that predictive inferences take time to construct on-line. The present study examines the relative contribution of time available during and after reading an inducing context. In six experiments, we manipulated the presentation rate of the context and the delay between the onset of the last word in the context and a target word. A predicting, or a control, sentence context was followed by a target word, which represented the predicted event or an unlikely event. The results indicated that increasing the time available during reading of the context improved comprehension of explicit information, but it did not affect construction of inferences. In contrast, increasing the delay at the end of the context did not affect explicit comprehension, but it enhanced the probability of inferences, as revealed by shorter latencies in naming the predictable target word after the inducing context, relative to the control context. These findings show that readers defer making predictive inferences until 1 sec after the sentence context has been read, regardless of the time available when they are processing the context.

Class II composite marginal ridge failure: conventional vs. proximal box only preparation.

This study evaluated the force necessary to cause failure at the marginal ridge of teeth prepared with conventional class II cavity design and teeth prepared with proximal box-only or vertical slot preparation. The teeth were restored with Herculite XR or Tetric Ceram. Mean failure loads were not found to be statistically significant between conventional class II preparations and proximal box-only preparations. The teeth restored with Tetric Ceram were significantly more resistant to the vertical load than teeth restored with Herculite.
