Usefulness of pneumococcal antigen detection in pleural fluid samples by immunochromatographic assay for diagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia.

This study investigated the utility of an immunochromatographic test (ICT) for the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae antigens in pleural fluid. Antigen was detected in 15 of 19 (79%) patients with pneumococcal pneumonia. The ICT was always negative in patients with non-pneumococcal pneumonia, but was positive in three cases with a non-infectious aetiology. In patients with pneumonia for which no pathogen was identified, antigen was detected in one of 24 pleural fluids tested. The ICT can be a valuable tool for the management of pneumonia because it can detect pneumococcal antigen in pleural effusion samples.

Sequences homologous to the hobo transposable element in E strains of Drosophila melanogaster.

Hobo is one of the three Drosophila melanogaster transposable elements, together with the P and I elements, that seem to have recently invaded the genome of this species. Surveys of the presence of hobo in strains from different geographical and temporal origins have shown that recently collected strains contain complete and deleted elements with high sequence similarity (H strains), but old strains lack hobo elements (E strains). Besides the canonical hobo sequences, both H and E strains show other poorly known hobo-related sequences. In the present work, we analyze the presence, cytogenetic location, and structure of some of these sequences in E strains of D. melanogaster. By in situ hybridization, we found that euchromatic hobo-related sequences were in fixed positions in all six E strains analyzed: 38C in the 2L arm; 42B and 55A in the 2R arm; 79E and 80B in the 3L arm; and 82C, 84C, and 84D in the 3R arm. Sequence comparison shows that some of the hobo-related sequences from Oregon-R and iso-1 strains are similar to the canonical hobo element, but their analysis reveals that they are substantially diverged and rearranged and cannot code for a functional transposase. Our results suggest that these ubiquitous hobo-homologous sequences are immobile and are distantly related to the modern hobo elements from D. melanogaster.

[Mineral composition of milk from the State of Mérida, Venezuela].

The main mineral components were measured on 132 composite raw milk samples collected in the low and high zones of Mérida State, located in the Venezuelan Andes, by spectrophotometric and atomic absorption methods. The results were grouped to evaluate the effect of the zone (low vs. high) breed (hybred vs. Holstein) and season (dry vs. rain). The mean values and standard deviations (mg/L) were: sodium, 537.0 +/- 143.05; potassium, 1327.9 +/- 133.84; calcium, 952.4 +/- 118.67, phosphorous, 739.2 +/- 97.9; iron, 0.397 +/- 0.1549; magnesium, 82.4 +/- 10.40; copper, 0.589 +/- 0.340; zinc, 7.95 +/- 1.737. These values were higher for the low zones due probably to differences in the production systems. Significant high concentration of iron and copper were obtained which could result in milks susceptible to oxidative rancidity.

The beta-endorphin response to prenatal stress during postnatal development in the rat.

We examined the hypothalamic beta-endorphin (B-END) levels in offspring (postnatal day 10) from stressed female rats in different period of gestation: group 1, restraint stress from day 2 to 6; group 2, from day 7 to 11 and group 3, from day 2 to 16. The hypothalamic levels of B-END in the offspring from group 1 were significantly (P < 0.001) higher to that obtained in the control. Similar results were obtained in the group 2. However, in rat pups from female stressed during 15 days of gestation hypothalamic levels of B-END were similar to control group.

[Netherton syndrome].

The authors reported a case of Netherton's syndrome. This patient presented cutaneous lesions of ichthyosis linearis circumflexa, tricorrexis invaginata and atopy signs associated with cystinuria. Cutaneous and hair lesions were treated with etretinate.
