Visuospatial impairment in depression: a controlled ECT study.

In order to study the effect of bilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on visuospatial function in depression, a comparison was made between the performance of 20 ECT-treated patients and 20 healthy controls on a battery of neuropsychological tests including the Complex Figure Test (CFT) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The CFT but not the MMSE performances of depressives vs controls were impaired in pre-ECT testing. While ECT does not affect visuospatial performance, cognitive deficits are unveiled by MMSE. Possible meanings of these findings are discussed.

Cerebral atrophy and neuropsychological correlates in schizophrenia.

Twenty-three patients with DSM III chronic schizophrenia, were given the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and had CT brain scans performed in order to measure the size of the 3rd and 4th ventricles and ventricular brain ratio (VBR). CT-scans showed an evident enlargement of the 3rd ventricle and a VBR overall significantly above that found in normal sample. No significant correlation between ventricular size and cognitive impairment was found. Possible meanings of these findings will be discussed in this paper.

A computerized tomographic study in patients with depressive disorder: a comparison with schizophrenic patients and controls.

Using computed tomography, Ventricular Brain Ratio (VBR) was assessed in a sample of 42 depressive patients, 36 schizophrenic patients and 37 controls. The values of affective patients laid between, but did not differ significantly from those of schizophrenic patients on the one hand and controls on the other. The schizophrenic patients showed VBR increase when compared to controls. Possible implications of VBR measurement, in patients with affective illness are discussed.
