Microvessel density and vascular endothelial growth factor expression in sinus augmentation using Bio-Oss.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate microvessel density (MVD) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in sinus augmentation with Bio-Oss. METHODS: Twenty patients participated in this study. The sinuses were filled with 100% Bio-Oss. Implants were inserted after 3 months in group A, and 6 months in group B. A trephine was used to harvest bone cores. As control, the pre-existing subantral bone was used. RESULTS: The mean MVD in control bone was 23.6 +/- 1.8. In the sites augmented with Bio-Oss, at 3 months, the MVD was 23.3 +/- 2.1, while in the sites retrieved at 6 months the MVD was 29.5 +/- 2.4. The difference in MVD between the control bone and group A was not statistically significant. The difference between the control bone and group B was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The statistical analysis showed that the difference in MVD between group A and group B was statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Bio-Oss seemed to induce an increase in MVD that reached a higher value after 6 months. The percentage of vessels positive to VEGF was higher in group A than in group B. Our data also showed a higher percentage of vessel and stromal cells positive to VEGF and higher MVD values in areas where there was newly formed bone compared with areas where maturation processes were occuring, and this fact could point to a close spatial relationship between angiogenesis and osteogenesis.

[Vascular microanastomoses in the experimental and clinical transplantation of tube and ovary].

This work offers a review of the progresses achieved in both experimental and clinical fields about internal genital organs grafting. The Authors refer their own experience on the vascular microanastomosis and the grafting in rats. They particularly point out the difficulties and the problems they have met during their study. Microsurgical technic has allowed to achieve the viability of the microanastomosis controlled by hystological observations after 10 and 30 days.

[Experimental microsurgery operations on the rabbit fallopian tube].

The authors show their experience in tubal microsutures in rabbits belonging to the New Zealand type. Three groups of seven rabbits each have been examined and for each group a different type of microsurgical operation has been carried out. Post operational checks where effected immediately afterwards and sometimes after the operation.

Histologic analysis of the interface of a titanium implant retrieved from a nonvascularized mandibular block graft after a 10-month loading period.

The combined use of bone grafts and osseointegrated implants appears to improve the long-term prognosis of transplanted bone. One question pertaining to the use of grafted bone is whether the biologic reaction to implants placed in grafted bone is the same as that seen under nongrafted conditions. A mandibular discontinuity defect in a 63-year-old female patient was repaired with a nonvascularized block graft into which 3 titanium implants were placed. After a 10-month loading period, one of the implants was retrieved and treated to obtain thin ground sections. The histologic examination showed mature bone in close contact with the implant surface; no gaps, fibrous tissue, or inflammatory cells were seen at the interface. No resorption phenomena were present. The bone at the interface was highly mineralized. The features of the regenerated bone and the bone-implant interface in grafted bone were similar to those seen in nongrafted situations; no differences were found with results presented in the literature concerned with retrieved implants placed into vascularized grafts.
