[Increase of IgE in asthmatic children: correlation with eosinophilia, skin tests and the value of the other gamma-globulins].

After considering IgE behaviour in various forms of atopic diseases the authors examine the importance of serum IgE levels in bronchial asthma diagnosis. They herein underline the correlation between IgE and positive skin test, its relationship with other immunoglobulines and its proportional increase to the age of the patient and the eosinophilia. As far as this study is concerned, 91% of asthmatic children register an IgE increase, against 9% only, this being the case of children under three years of age; 91% skin tests are positive and 41% register an increase of IgA, while the eosinophilia is unsignificant. The anamnestic data of atopic dermatitis and asthmatic bronchitis affecting 15 among our patients are found to be of great importance.

[Neonatal infections caused by group B beta-hemolytic Streptococcus].

The aim of the Asiago Congress is to illustrate the progress in Group B Streptococcal neonatal disease management. It is of primary importance the obstetricians and neonatologists should think alike and should not allow their interest to develop along separate lines. The themes of the Congress were the incidence, the clinical and diagnostic new features, the old and the new therapeutic trends and the obstetrician's prevention. Contributions from twenty-four Neonatologist Groups are included; they are summarized in four main articles and all together they form a synopsis of modern clinical practice and recent research in neonatal medicine.

[Urinary tract infections in newborns: sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value of urinary screening with the reagent strip test].

Important considerations in evaluating newborn urine examinations by dip-stick method are: ease of performance, the volume of the specimen required for test, the time required to perform the test and the cost. In considering the dip-stick test for the early diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infections (U.T.I.), it has never been tested with later follow-up to evaluate its sensitivity and specificity, also in regard to reduce the risk of further complications for urinary tract and kidney.

[Malformative uropathies: prenatal diagnosis, incidence, and diagnostic protocol].

With the aim to evaluate the progress in prenatal diagnosis and postnatal management of urinary tract malformations, we report the postnatal incidence of this problem related to prenatal US diagnosis. Contributions from ten neonatologist Groups are included; they are referred to a limited area in the north-west of Italy. During the year 1993, 11.503 pregnant women were tested by US and 90 neonates were further studied in the first week of postnatal age; in 44 of them the urinary tract malformation were confirmed by US. The incidence has varied from 0. 64 to 6.08% (3,8 per 1.000 life birds) confirming the importance of such a screening.

[Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in the newborn].

The condition referred to as "birth asphyxia" occurs as the result of a hypoxic-ischaemic insult during the process of labour and delivery. There is no standard clinical definition for birth asphyxia, but its incidence in term infants has been differently reported to be between 2.9 and 9.0 cases per 1000 deliveries. In term infants the risk of death appeared to be closely related to the duration that the Apgar score is severely depressed. The best predictor of disability in surviving infants is abnormal neurological behavior in the neonatal period referred to as hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. Unfortunately, there are no generally accepted treatment regimens for birth asphyxia and traditional methods for treating hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy have not been shown to improve outcome.

[Prevalence and costs of tuberculin screening performed at Altopiano di Asiago (Vicenza) during a decade].

We determined the results of Tuberculosis Skin Test (TST) screening on pediatric population in the Asiago District, Italy, by means of Tine-test. During the period 1986-1995, all schoolchildren born between 1976 and 1988 were Tine-tested at least once. Furthermore all children, 6 months-14 years, hospitalized in the local General Hospital during the same period, 1986-1995, received one Mantoux-test; only the immunologically depressed ones and those who had undergone a Tine-test in the previous 6 months were excluded. A total of 5436 Tine-tests over 3220 schoolchildren were carried out; 1244 children were tested by Mantoux-test during hospitalization; 414 children underwent both of them by chance. 34 schoolchildren (1.07%) were Tine-test positive; only 3 out of them proved to be positive at the following Mantoux-test and therapy was carried out. 5 children out of 1244 proved to be Mantoux-positive during hospitalization; among them only 2 cases of tuberculosis were identified, less than 0,5% of all screned children. Tine-test identified 3 Mantoux-positive children; each of them costed about 9,850 US. It is a moot question if resources should then be directed only towards screening children at high risk of tuberculosis infection.
