In Belgium as in most developed countries, the proportions of breastfed to bottle-fed newborns is poorly known. A compilation of infant feeding information, available on cards which were completed at the time newborns were screened for inborn metabolic errors, indicates that in the years 1992 and 1993, 62.5 percent of infants were breastfed on day five of life. The data collected in this way were consistent for the years studied. Other countries may also be able to use screening cards to estimate breastfeeding initiation rates.
The pulse oximeter can serve as a sensitive photoelectric plethysmograph in the operating room. It was noted in several cases that the plethysmographic waveform showed a high degree of variability during diastole. Three patients are described with discrete diastolic peaks on the plethysmograph. Further investigation revealed that these diastolic peaks appear to correlate with peripheral venous pulsation, which seems to have a central venous origin. Evidence is presented that the plethysmographic detection of the venous-pulse may be useful in estimating the changing volume status of the patient.
We report a case of Kawasaki disease in which some unusual symptoms, including petechiae, an urticaria-like eruption, and necrotic pharyngitis, made the diagnosis difficult. No complications were detected during a follow-up period of 15 months.
