[IgG therapy of experimental E. coli sepsis in neutropenic mice].

The treatment of Ceftriaxone and IgG in neutropenic (Group A), and in normal (Group B) mice were investigated in experimental E. coli sepsis. IgG was obtained from the rabbits immunized with same strain. The inoculum dose of infection was 4 x 10(8) bacteria/ml in the experiment. The two groups were divided into four subgroups; Control, IgG. Ceftriaxone and Ceftriaxone + IgG groups. The mortality rates of mice in both groups and bacteria growing in organ cultures are investigated and compared. IgG treatment reduced the mortality in the normal mice, but no significant difference was found between two groups. An addition of IgG to Ceftriaxone treatment significantly decreased the mortality rate in both of the groups (p less than 0.05). But a significant difference was not observed between two subgroups treated with IgG and Ceftriaxone.

[Antibiotic and specific immunoglobulin G in the treatment of E. coli sepsis in mice previously given steroids].

Experimental E. coli sepsis was constituted in two groups of mice. One of the groups have been immunosuppressed by steroid therapy of ten days (group A) and the other group was normal (group B). Ceftriaxone and Ig G, prepared by vaccinating rabbits with the same strain of E. coli, were used in therapy. The results of the therapy in both were compared. The mortality rate of mice on Ig G therapy was % 70 in group A and % 80 in group B and that on ceftriaxone therapy % 60 and % 50, respectively. The mortality rate was % 30 in both groups with Ig G + ceftriaxone therapy. There wasn't any significance between these. On this research, the treatment of antibiotic together with Ig G decreased the mortality rate. The statistical value of the mortality rate among the treatment groups was not found significant.

Treatment of tuberculous meningitis in adults with a combination of isoniazid, rifampicin and streptomycin: a prospective study.

15 patients with tuberculous meningitis were treated with isoniazid, streptomycin and rifampicin and 14 with isoniazid, streptomycin and ethambutol for 12 months. Both groups received prednisolone at the beginning of treatment. The two groups were compared with regard to clinical improvement, presence of neurological sequelae and mortality. No difference in recovery rate between the groups was observed. 6 patients (21%) died (5 in group I and 1 in group II). Residual sequelae developed in 9 cases (5 in group I and 4 in group II; 31%). The difference between the groups was not significant. The regimen including rifampicin for tuberculous meningitis did not result in any superiority compared to standard therapy.

A case of cutaneous anthrax with toxaemic shock.

We describe a patient who presented with a necrotic black eschar 2 x 2 cm on the neck, extensive erythema around the lesion and massive oedema extending from the lesion to the umbilicus, and involving the whole face. Severe toxaemia and shock developed. Bacillus anthracis was isolated from the lesion. Prednisolone and dopamine failed to reverse the shock. The patient recovered completely with penicillin therapy.

Primary throat anthrax. A report of six cases.

73 cases of anthrax were recorded by the Health Office in the Sivas region in the last 4 years. This paper presents a rare and severe clinical form of anthrax displaying diagnostic difficulties. Six women aged between 16-46 were diagnosed as having throat anthrax and treated in the Infectious Diseases Department of Cumhuriyet University. The lesions were localized on the tonsils in 5 cases and on the base of the tongue in 1 case. The main clinical features were sore throat, dysphagia, fever, regional lymphadenopathy on the neck and toxemia. Three patients died with toxemia and sepsis. The diagnosis was confirmed by the isolation of Bacillus anthracis.

[Food poisoning caused by Bacillus cereus].

An outbreak of food poisoning was observed in Sivas on March 27, 1985 involving 25 patients who work at the same place. Clinical picture was characterized with nausea, abdominal pain and watery diarrhea. B. cereus was isolated from the stool of 4 patients. No other enteropathogens were found.

[Evaluation of penicillin alone and penicillin combined with anti-anthrax serum in experimental anthrax in mice].

In this study penicillin alone versus penicillin combined with anti-anthrax serum were compared in the treatment of experimental anthrax of mice. Three groups of mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with the same suspension of Bacillus anthracis. Ten hours after the onset of infection the control group received no treatment, to the second group penicillin-G was injected every day, and the 3 rd group received penicillin-G plus anti-anthrax serum. The survival rate of the latter two groups was significantly higher than that of the control group. But, there was no difference in the survival of mice and the distribution of the bacilli in various tissues between the penicillin treated mice and the penicillin plus anti-anthrax serum treated group of mice.

[Review of the recent advances on interferon and interferon therapy].

Interferon is a glycoprotein that has antiviral activity. Recently, important advances have been obtained about it's purification, pharmacological effects and side effects and spectrum. It's clinical applications have increased in the treatment the viral and tumoral diseases. It is been reported that the good results have been obtained in the treatment of varicella zoster and other herpetic viruses, cytomegalovirus Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis B virus infections and in the viral infection of the respiratory tracts. In this article, the recently advances about interferon and it's use in the treatment of viral infections have been reviewed.

[A review of 35 anthrax cases].

Of 35 cases diagnosed as anthrax during 1.9.1981 - 1.12.1982, 18 were females (51,4%) and 17 were males (48,6%), the mean age was 39,7. All of the women were housewives, 14 male patients were farmers, 1 was a tradesman, 1 a worker, and 1 a butcher. It was localised on the skin in 31 cases (88,6%) and in the throat in 4 cases (11,4%). Penicillin was used for treatment. In one of the cases with throat localisation, sepsis developed, leading to death.

[A case of meningitis due to Acinetobacter calcoaceticus].

Meningitis due to Acinetobacter calcoaceticus is rare. These rare bacteria were isolated from culture fluid in patient resembling to Neisseria meningitis with clinical and laboratory findings. The patient was treated with sensitive antibiotic.

The clinical presentation of intracranial abscesses. A study of seventy-eight cases.

From 1980 through 1991, 78 patients with brain abscess were treated at the Cukurova University School of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery by surgical excision and antimicrobial therapy. Males predominated in all age groups. Although only 17 percent had a predisposing conditions such as local sinus infection, cyanotic heart disease, the majority of the cases had some evidence of a systemic infection such as peripheral leucocytosis and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The correct diagnosis was commonly not considered despite to these clues of an infective process on admission. The operative mortality was 20% which was similar to the other series reported in the literature. However in spite of significant progress with the advent of computerized tomography, microbiology and antibiotic treatment, difficulties in early diagnosis are held to be responsible for the residual high mortality. Although the appropriate antibiotic therapy, adjuvant medical therapies to control perioperative brain swelling, and the application of reliable surgical techniques have decreased the mortality and morbidity rates, the best result can only be obtained to a wider number of patients if the physician remains alert to the possibility of an intracranial abscess.
