The effects of near null magnetic field upon the leucocyte response in rats.

Wistar rats were kept for 2 and 4 weeks in conditions of near null magnetic field. The total serum proteins, lipids and glucides, as well as the leucocyte and neutrophil counts showed no significant changes against controls kept in natural magnetic field conditions. A significant monocytosis, a decrease in the circulating phagocyte count and in the phagocytic activity was noticed in null magnetic field. These results suggest that the natural magnetic field significantly influences health both on the ground and possibly in cosmic conditions.

Effect of magnesium sulfate on learning, emotivity and spontaneous motility in rats.

The study was performed on three groups, each including 10 male Wistar rats, weighing 110-130 g: group 1, the control group; group 2, animals treated with magnesium sulfate in a dose of 100 mg/kg body/day i.m.; group 3, animals treated with double dose of magnesium sulfate (200 mg/kg body/day i.m.). All animals were tested for emotivity and spontaneous motility in the open field, as well as for their capacity of acquiring active avoidance conditioned reflexes in the shuttle-box, for 9 days. Magnesium sulfate decreased significantly the learning ability, decreased emotivity scores regardless of the administered dose, and increased significantly spontaneous motility scores only in the double dose treated group.

The effects of dopaminergic mediation upon colloidopectic activity of the mononuclear phagocyte system.

The investigations were carried out on 30 Wistar albino male rats. A group of animals received Levodpa (Nakom), another group received Methyldopa (Dopegyt). One and a half hour after administration, the phagocytic activity was measured using colloidal carbon. Subsequent to Levodopa administration a significant increase occurred in the phagocytic activity. Following the treatment with Methyldopa the phagocytic activity in macrophages decreased. Our studies confirm the idea that the central adrenergic system stimulates the colloidopectic capacity of macrophages.

The control of erythropoiesis (Romanian contributions).

The main contributions of a Romanian team, headed by I. Baciu, in the field of the control of erythropoiesis are presented. The role of the central nervous system in the regulation of erythrocytes production and the identification of chemoreceptors sensitive to hypoxia in the central nervous system are disclosed. The studies concerning the secretion and the effects of erythropoietin are also emphasized. The paper provided references to the recent data concerning the structure of erythropoietin, the membrane receptors, the metabolism and the practical applications of the hormone.

[The involvement of the cerebral cortex, hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal cortex in the development of periodontosis].

The authors emphasized in parodontosis patients functional alterations of hypothalamic centres with phagocytosis-stimulatory, vasomotor and neurotrophic functions and disturbances of the functional relationship between the hypothalamus (H), the ascendent reticular formation (RF) and the cerebral cortex (CC). Stimulatory therapy of this areas, especially by direct stimulation of the H improves the hypothalamic functions, the relationship between H and the RF and all the clinical status of parodontosis patients. In rabbits with experimental parodontosis have been found functional and histological alterations in cerebral cortex, and especially in hypothalamus, together with lesions in the hypothalamo-posthypophyso-neurosecretoric system, in the anterior pituitary (P) cells (for ACTH, TSH and FSH) as well as in zona fasciculares of the adrenal cortex (AC). This data, together with findings of other authors, prove that parodontosis is a diencephalopathy involving a whole system: CC-H-P-AC.

The effect of reduced glutathione (TAD-600) on the behavior of rats neonatally intoxicated with ethanol.

The study was performed on three groups of male rats of the Wistar strain at the age of three months: group 1 (n = 10), the control group; group 2 (n = 10), consisting of animals treated neonatally (from day 4 through day 10) with ethanol 20%, administered by gavage to the mothers, at the dose of 5 g/kg body/day; group 3 (n = 10) of animals exposed to ethanol under similar conditions, but whose mothers have been injected a reduced glutathione (TAD-600) solution in a dose of 2 mg/100 g body weight of the mother. All the animals were weight ed before the test of behavior. The neonatal administration of ethanol caused ponderal weight retardation, which was not influenced by TAD-600 administrations. Also, a decrease in the scores of emotivity and spontaneous motility in the open field was noticed, as well as difficulties in the acquisition of active avoidance conditioned reflexes in the shuttle-box. Concomitant glutathione administration during the neonatal period significantly improves the learning ability at the age of three months, as well as the score of emotivity, without improving the spontaneous motility score.
