Molecular analysis of Desulfitobacterium frappieri pcp-1 involved in reductive dehalogenation of pentachlorophenol.

Desulfitobacterium are Gram positive, spore-forming, strictly anaerobic bacteria, that belong to the Firmicutes, Clostridia, Clostridiales, and Peptococcaceae. Most known members of the genus Desulfitobacterium have the ability to dechlorinate several halogenated compounds by a mechanism of reductive dehalogenation and use them as electron acceptors to generate energy (halorespiration). Desulfitobacteria are therefore perfect candidates to be used in bioremediation treatments of environment polluted with halogenated compounds. Understanding the physiology and the molecular mechanisms of these bacteria will help to develop better bioremediation systems. This report summarizes works that have been done in our laboratories with D. frappieri PCP-1 on reductive dehalogenases, genes encoding these dehalogenases and their expression, and the development of lab-scale PCP-degrading reactors using this bacterium.

[The physician and disability certificates: preconceived attitudes and behaviors].

Five attitudes and predicted behaviors characterize the physicians' responses (strategies) to invalidity certificates. These are: 1- scientific objectivation; 2- complicity (meaning: always completing the certificates without objective preoccupations of any kind); 3- socio political (meaning: influenced by the physician's ideas concerning ways the society should consider the non-working people: permissive or repressive); 4- negotiation (implicating a psychobiosocial approach to the patient and the problem); 5- indifference (never completing certificates, referring this role to someone else). Our recent survey (September 1986) including 92 physicians of a General Hospital (Cité de la Santé) in Laval demonstrates a preponderant attitude, the "socio political" one (A3). But, it has no relation to the preponderant predicted behavior which is the negotiation (C4), characterizing a psychobiosocial approach to the patient and the problem. This behavior has been chosen in a statistically significant way. Nevertheless, there is a relation between the attitude A1: scientific objectivation and the corresponding predicted behavior C1: scientific objectivation. Notions of rationability, professionalism and sociable desirability are evoked as explanations of these results.

Low-back pain: a psychosomatic clinical study.

Most studies relating psychological factors to low-back pain have been done on subjects already referred to psychiatry. This study addresses 27 patients who had undergone their first lumber discoidectomy and never had any contact with psychiatry. They were submitted to a threefold assessment in order to find psychosocial criteria that could discriminate good- from bad-outcome subjects. It was found that a bad outcome was related to: a difficulty in perceiving and expressing affects, some financial compensation, high rating on pain assessment tests.
