[Correlation between otoacoustic emissions and BAEP. The importance of their combined use].

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) of 50 newborn with negative transient evoked acoustic emissions (OEAT) was performed. 54% of them had no family history of sensorineural hearing loss (SHNL) and no risk factors were found. In 70% of cases ABR recording was negative. Follow up did show that 60% of them had normal recordings of hearing and in a 40% different stages of hearing loss were seen. To establish a definitive diagnosis a 1 to 9 month period is necessary.

[Evaluation of electroneurography as a prognostic method in the development of peripheral facial paralysis].

Electroneurography (EnoG) is a prognostic test used in the assessment of the peripheral facial nerve paralysis. We believe that when performed in standard conditions and together with the clinical evolutive parameters, it is very useful to reveal the critical time for a more radical treatment. We studied 44 patients; 13 patients had greater than 90% neural degeneration on EnoG. 5 of them underwent facial nerve surgical decompression due to a poor clinical outcome and up to three of these patients had a normal facial function after this.

[Forestier's syndrome. Report of two cases].

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) with cervical involvement which cause dysphagia is a rare disease. The otolaryngologist usually can make its diagnostic with a barium swallowing esophagogram. Two patients with DISH are reported.

Three maize root-specific genes are not correctly expressed in regenerated caps in the absence of the quiescent center.

The quiescent center is viewed as an architectural template in the root apical meristem of all angiosperm and gymnosperm root tips. In roots of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh., the quiescent center inhibits differentiation of contacting initial cells and maintains the surrounding initial cells as stem cells. Here, the role of the quiescent center in the development of the maize (Zeca mays L.) root cap has been further explored. Three maize root-specific genes were identified. Two of these were exclusively expressed in the root cap and one of them encoded a GDP-mannose-4,6-dehydratase. Most likely these two genes are structural, tissue-specific markers of the cap. The third gene, a putative glycine-rich cell wall protein, was expressed in the cap and in the root epidermis and, conceivably is a positional marker of the cap. Microsurgical and molecular data indicate that the quiescent center and cap initials may regulate the positional and structural expression of these genes in the cap and thereby control root cap development.

Incidence of dehiscences in the fallopian canal.

Fifty human temporal bones from necropsies were used to study the frequency of canal dehiscences in detail along the course of the facial nerve. Specifically, the study focused on bony dehiscences in the fallopian canal and vascular communications between the facial nerve and the surrounding bone. High frequency of dehiscences at the oval window (60%) and in the pyramidal segment (54%) were found. These dehiscence rates are in agreement with published reports. A 20% rate of dehiscences at the most anterior segment of the tympanic segment was noted and a non-reported high rate (20%) of multiple dehiscences along the course of the fallopian canal in the same temporal bone in specimens of newborns and young children. The significance of these findings in terms of clinical implications is discussed.

The aberrant cell walls of boron-deficient bean root nodules have no covalently bound hydroxyproline-/proline-rich proteins.

B-deficient bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) nodules examined by light microscopy showed dramatic anatomical changes, mainly in the parenchyma region. Western analysis of total nodule extracts examined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that one 116-kD polypeptide was recognized by antibodies raised against hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins (HRGPs) from the soybean (Glycine max) seed coat. A protein with a comparable molecular mass of 116 kD was purified from the cell walls of soybean root nodules. The amino acid composition of this protein is similar to the early nodulin (ENOD2) gene. Immunoprecipitation of the soybean ENOD2 in vitro translation product showed that the soybean seed coat anti-HRGP antibodies recognized this early nodulin. Furthermore, we used these antibodies to localize the ENOD2 homolog in bean nodules. Immunocytochemistry revealed that in B-deficient nodules ENOD2 was absent in the walls of the nodule parenchyma. The absence of ENOD2 in B-deficient nodules was corroborated by performing hydroxyproline assays. Northern analysis showed that ENOD2 mRNA is present in B-deficient nodules; therefore, the accumulation of ENOD2 is not affected by B deficiency, but its assembly into the cell wall is. B-deficient nodules fix much less N2 than control nodules, probably because the nodule parenchyma is no longer an effective O2 barrier.

[Reconstructive septal surgery: review of various implants in the nasal area].

In the reconstructive techniques of the nose the rhinologist must employ several materials for rebuilding unprotected septo-pyramidal areas. In spite of its partial resorption the cartilage continues to be the best element. Other objections for its use either the distortion or its weakness against infections, are overcome by an appropriate preparation of the graft.

[Dermatoses in the metallurgy industry].

The authors proceeded to a skin examination of 1,194 consecutive workers in a cutlery industry with 3,692 employees, in order to detect any cutaneous alterations among them. Only 223 (18.7%) had no skin pathology. Most of them, 971 (81.3%) presented some cutaneous disorder, related or not with their work. Hyperkeratosis of the fingers and hands (262 cases) caused by repeated traumas due to the manipulation of the instruments of work were the most noticeable and specific occupational skin alteration. In second place in order of frequency were the intertriginous mycotic inflammation of the toes: 255 cases. The authors call attention to the low incidence of the sexually transmitted diseases as well as of scabies, pediculosis and impetigo.

Study of a set of chromatographic parameters for the determination of estrogens.

Optimum chromatographic parameters for the separation and detection of estrogen TMS derivatives are described. Estrogens are best separated by using a 2 m glass column with 1% SE-30 load; an 8' iso temperature program, 230 degrees C, 3 degrees C/min, 296 degrees C; 24 ml/min nitrogen flow; 33 ml/min hydrogen flow and 1.5 Kg/cm2 air pressure.
