Androgyny and differences in fantasy patterns.

The relationship between sex-typing (androgynous vs traditional) and differences in fantasies of 19 men and 37 women was investigated. They completed May's test as a measure of fantasy pattern and the Bem Sex-role Inventory to ascertain sex-type. Analysis indicated that, while fantasy patterns were related to gender as expected from May's work, they were not related to sex-typing.

Empathy, others-concept, and prosocial orientation.

The relationship between 56 nursing students' empathy and their others-concept was investigated to establish ties to a broader construct, prosocial orientation. The female Caucasian nursing students were rated for empathy by two clinical instructors. They were also given the Paired Hands Test to assess their others-concept. The students with the higher empathy ratings had more positive others-concepts. The responses of the low empathy group to the Paired Hands Test indicated a much stronger tendency to perceive and interpret social interactions negatively. Besides practical implications for nurses and other helping professionals, these findings have theoretical ramifications as well. Others-concept has been shown previously to be related to a cluster of variables such as positive social behavior and moral judgment. Evidence of the relationship to empathy helps to tie this cluster to the prosocial orientation construct as a base for further research.

Early recollections of alcoholic women.

Early recollections of 27 alcoholic women were significantly different from those of 30 control subjects. Recollections of alcoholics suggested more disturbed relationships with family and nonfamily members, more references to incidents that elicited fear, anxiety, and other negative affects, and little acceptance of responsibility for what happens in their memories. Utilizations of these results must be viewed cautiously until further investigation with larger and varied samples provides additional supporting evidence.

Early recollections of women preparing for nursing careers.

Early recollections of 35 nursing students were significantly different from those of a group of 38 nonnursing majors. Recollections of nursing students suggested more mastery and vigorous physical movements. The settings of the incidents of nursing students were less frequently inside their homes. Recollections of nursing students suggest that their actions are usually the results of their own decisions. If confirmed on cross-validation with larger and varied samples, such indicators might be used with other sources of information for vocational counseling.

First memories of "normal" and of schizophrenic, paranoid-type individuals.

Compared the early recollections of 40 schizophrenic, paranoid-type patients and 37 "normal" individuals. The themes of the early recollections of the two groups were significantly different. The normal group reported events such as illness, injury, and attention-getting more frequently than the schizophrenic group, whereas the early recollections of the schizophrenic group contained more variety of the themes than those of the normal group.
