The Reach to Recovery program.

The diagnosis of breast cancer brings with it significant psychosocial concerns and questions. Part of providing comprehensive care for a woman with breast cancer requires the physician to be aware of the Reach To Recovery Program, which is a peer modeling program provided by the American Cancer Society. The women who are part of the program have had treatment for breast cancer, either a lumpectomy or mastectomy, and are trained volunteers who provide support and information for the woman diagnosed with breast cancer. The Reach To Recovery Program is a tool that can benefit both the physician and the woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer, because the Reach To Recovery volunteer can respond to the unique concerns of the woman. The concerns can include the physical, emotional, and cosmetic needs related to the disease and/or its treatment. This paper will discuss the role of the Reach To Recovery volunteer, the features and benefits of the program, and ways in which the physician can access the Reach To Recovery Program. The Reach To Recovery Program is in the process of being revised to meet the changing needs that are the result of new treatments and shorter hospital stays. Alternative types of visit patterns will be presented.

A profile of faculty development in physical therapy education programs.

The purpose of this study was to report on the status of faculty development in physical therapy education programs. A survey questionnaire was sent to the directors of 110 physical therapy programs nationwide. Analysis of responses from respondents (n = 79; 72%) demonstrated 1) criteria used to evaluate faculty members were similar among different institutions, 2) fewer than half of the institutions have a faculty development plan (FDP), 3) the majority of those institutions that have an FDP supported similar areas and activities to facilitate faculty development, and 4) respondents used creative ways to support faculty development. The results appear to indicate that most physical therapy programs do not have a formalized program to assist faculty members in their development of skills in research, teaching, and service. Early mobilization in acute spinal cord injury. A collaborative approach.

It is apparent that if comprehensive care of the spinal cord-injured patient is to be provided, there must be a team effort. The members of the team can use the strategies described to develop a good working relationship that will lead to optimum care for the patient. Using the rehabilitation team model may promote the process of team development and interaction. This leads to appreciation of each team member's contributions and demonstrates how team members compliment each other in the treatment of the SCI patient.
