A review of intraocular foreign body injuries and complications in N. Ireland from 1978-1986.

In a study of 95 patients with intraocular foreign body injuries presenting in the eight year period from 1978-1986 we found the overall visual results to be good with 62% of patients achieving a final visual acuity of 6/18 or better. The factors leading to a poor visual result were a large intraocular foreign body, poor presenting visual acuity and the presence of posterior vitreo-retinal complications. We support the removal of dense vitreous haemorrhage to reduce the risk of retinal traction.

Compression keratopathy.

A 31-year-old man developed a localized corneal epithelial lesion after exposure to a high-pressure fire extinguisher jet. Visual acuity was temporarily decreased from 20/20 to 20/40 and intraocular pressure was increased to 28 mm Hg. Both values returned to normal within 18 hours after treatment. This represents an extreme form of anterior corneal mosaic associated with microsplits of the corneal epithelium.

Eye injuries in Northern Ireland two years after seat belt legislation.

Two hundred and forty-six patients with ocular perforation were treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, between 1 February 1981 and 31 January 1985. Road traffic accidents were responsible for 63 injuries, all of which affected front seat occupants, and 45 occurred before implementation of the seat belt law on 1 February 1983. Following legislation there was a 60% reduction in ocular injuries, which confirms the protective effect on front seat occupants of wearing a seat belt.
