Neodymium-yttrium aluminium garnet laser destruction of nonsensitized and hematoporphyrin derivative-sensitized tumors.

The injection of hematoporphyrin derivative (5 mg/kg i.v.) followed 24 hr later by a neodymium-yttrium aluminium garnet laser irradiation shows the destruction of CX1 tumors grafted on nude mice. This acidophilic necrosis occurred with a significantly increased frequency in tumors treated by hematoporphyrin derivative injection and irradiated with the neodymium-yttrium aluminium garnet laser as compared with noninjected but irradiated tumors or with injected tumors irradiated with sunlight. On the basis of our data, it seems difficult to maintain the hypothesis of singlet oxygen production as the only mechanism of the phenomenon. Further studies will be necessary to explain the necrosis that we observed.

[Anatamo-pathologic aspects of gold-salt induced cholestasis. Report of two cases with ultrastructural study (author's transl)].

The authors report two cases of gold-salt-induced cholestasis. They make a review of the thirteen cases previously related in the literature ; the cholestasis was constant, the hepatocytic necrosis was unusual and the gold-salts were difficult to visualize in the liver biopsy and more especially at the ultrastructural level. The immunological mechanism of hypersensibility is well established ; the possibility of an associated hepatotoxicity is debated.

[Bone metastasis revealing a hepatoma. 13 cases].

The authors report a series of 13 cases of bony metastases leading to the discovery of a hepatoma. They were subjects of male sex, average age 64 years. Nine were severe alcoholics. The presenting symptoms were in 7 cases neurological, in four cases an isolated bone tumour, finally, one spontaneous fracture, and one case with pain alone. Severe loss of weight was frequent; in 10 cases out of 13 it was greater than 5 kg. Hepatomegaly was found in 8 cases, but in 3 cases there was no sign suggesting liver disease. In 7 cases out of nine, the metastases were already numerous at the time of diagnosis. The diagnosis of metastases from a hepatoma was made on the bone histology 11 times and from the hepatic histology in 6 cases. The histological of the bone metastasis reproduces very well that of the liver. In four cases there was local secretion of bile, in one case the metastatic liver cells underwent steatonecrosis.

[Tertiary hyperparathyroidism after renal transplantation in man. Treatment by parathyroidectomy and auto-graft. Eight cases (author's transl)].

In a series of 76 functional renal transplantations we noted 8 cases of hyperparthyroidism occurring in periods ranging from 2 months to 4 years. Hypercalcaemia was the most constant manifestation. PTH was raised in the 7 subjects in whom it was measured. Eight patients underwent total parathyroidectomy followed in 7 of them by auto-graft of a fragment of parathyroid into a forearm muscle according to the technique of Wells. The operation was followed in all cases by normalisation in blood calcium levels after the 1st month. Serum PTH levels also returned to normal apart from in one case where renal function was impaired because of rejection of the renal graft. Comparative estimations of PTH in venous blood from the side of the auto-graft and the opposite side showed that the parathyroid graft was functioning.

[Tertiary hyperparathyroidism following kidney transplants in man treated by parathyroidectomy and parathyroid autografts. A report on 8 cases (author's transl)].

Hyperparathyroidism developed in 8 of 76 patients two months to 4 years after functional Kidney transplants, the most constant manifestation being a hypercalcemia. Raised PTH levels were present in all 7 patients in whom they were measured. The 8 patients were treated by total parathyroidectomy, followed in 7 cases by an autograft of a parathyroid fragment into the muscle off one forearm, according to the technique described by wells. Blood calcium levels became normal in all cases after one month. PTH levels also returned to normal except in one case where rejection of the Kidney graft caused a reduction in renal function. Comparing PTH levels in the venous blood on the side of the autograft with that on the opposite side demonstrated that the parathyroid graft was actively secreting.

[Hemostatic effects of the argon laser on the gastric wall in the dog. I. Preliminary study: effects of the laser on the normal gastric wall].

The authors describe the pathological lesions caused by argon laser emitted rays on the healthy gastric mucosa in 22 dogs. They compare 126 photocoagulated areas while varying the intensity and the exposure time of the laser ray in order to determine the ideal constants of an efficient photocoagulation, devoid of risk and with rapid healing of the lesions.

[Hemostatic effects of the argon laser on the gastric wall of the dog. II. Effects of the laser on 53 hemorrhagic ulcers of the gastric mucosa].

The authors made a histopathological study of 53 haemorrhagic ulcers of the gastric mucosa of the dog, photocoagulated using an Argon laser apparatus (delivering a power of 6 watts at the tip of the fibre). Haemostasis was obtained in less than 10 sec. in all cases where photocoagulation was performed by small applications of 1.5 sec. to the edges of the ulcer. There were no cases of perforation or muscularis damage. Healing of the lesions was complete or well under way at 15 days.
