[Combined effects caused by chronic exposure to vinyl chloride and dichloroethane].

The authors studied solitary and combined effects of vinyl chloride and dichloroethane in chronic (4 months) inhalation experiment using concentrations of 50 and 500 mg/m3. The experiment revealed general toxic effects including disorders of central nervous system and liver. Those disorders are caused by reductive-oxidative reactions disturbances and dystrophic processes. The authors determined safe combinations of vinyl chloride and dichloroethane concentrations for associated action.

[Infectious morbidity in technogenic environmental pollution].

Technogenic environmental pollution has a marked indirect influence on the growth of infection morbidity. While comparing areas with different technogenic loads, the most significant differences in the levels of morbidity were noted in the period of minimal epidemic process intensity. This period was the most susceptible link of an epidemiological year.

[Health status of children living in the vicinity of coal open pits].

Open-cast mining in the vicinities of the town of Cheremkhovo is cause of environmental pollution with Al, Pb, Zn, Cu, As, B, Ni, Be, Sn, Y, Cr, V. Assessing the health status of children living in this area revealed the following: a high incidence of diseases; multimorbidity with a tendency for chronicity; reduced concentrations of a complex of essential trace elements in the children's hair below the physiological level; abundant hair heavy metals; the relation of hair trace element composition to the coal output. Micro- and macroelement imbalance is likely to cause high morbidity in the children living in the open-cast mining area.

[Sanitary assessment of iodine levels in the environment and their impact on children's health].

The Irkutsk province and the Republic of Buryatia which are a part of the Baikal Region (Siberia) were studied for environmental iodine balance. The water and local foodstuffs were found to show low iodine levels (they being 0.2 to 6.9 micrograms/l). In children, iodine deficiency was detected in 60-87% of the total number examined. There was a relationship between of the severity of neurological symptoms, the onset of thyroid diseases, general morbidity, physical development, iodine levels in the body. It is concluded that iodine deficiency has a great impact on the development of the regional pathology in children.

[Sanitary assessment of radon hazards in residential buildings].

The authors have constructed models including that of dose-effect of the content of decay products, that of the volumetric activity of radon in the apartments, and that of biological human responses. They have found specific features of female reproduction dysfunction, perinatal, general, and cancer morbidity and mortality. The maximum ineffective radon concentration upon chronic exposure has been established by using dosage simulation of the frequency of genetic disorders (small malformations).

[Sanitary assessment of provision of children with selenium in the Baikal Lake area].

The provision of children from Baikal Lake areas with selenium was studied in relation to the geochemical area, the man-made pollution of an area, sex, age, and the presence of a disease has been studied. The content of selenium in the hairs of the children living in the areas extensively exposed to pollution is show to be lower than in those from ecologically pure areas. The correlation of selenium with other elements in the children's hair depends on the level of these elements. Thus, with low hair zinc content, there is a positive correlation (r = 0.32) between selenium and zinc (p < 0.05), while with its hair levels, there is a negative correlation (r = -0.46; p < 0.05). The content of selenium in the children's biosubstrata increases with age. The hair selenium levels are higher in girls than in boys. In ill children, they amount to 47 to 77% of those of healthy children.
