[Clinical use of chlorhexidine].

There is a wide variety of literature regarding chlorhexidine, so we have tried to put together the most recent studies in order to apply them to our clinical reality. Chlorhexidine is an excellent alternative which should be considered as the best chemical collaborator available in the market. In order to obtain the best therapeutic effects, chlorhexidine should always be used within a plaque control program administered by a professional. It's the best way to get the best advantages offered by this medicine.

Localization of alkaline phosphatase activity at microbody membranes of Neurospora crassa and Aspergillus nidulans.

Hyphal cells of Neurospora crassa and Aspergillus nidulans, grown in Sabouraud glucose broth or in a defined medium with xanthine or its catabolites as the nitrogen source, contained single membrane-bound organelles cytochemically identified as microbodies. Modified Gomori procedures at the ultrastructural level revealed putative alkaline phosphatase activity sites in thin sections of cells of both species of fungi. Microbody membranes displayed electron opaque deposits (lead phosphate) which were absent in control preparations either lacking the substrate (beta-glycerophosphate) or the lead capture ion. Inhibition of this enzymic activity was achieved in parallel incubations fortified with the inhibitor levamisole. Cells grown in media containing limiting levels of inorganic phosphate revealed additional alkaline phosphatase activity at and along the nuclear membrane and endoplasmic cisternae. Hexagonal inclusions found in the cytoplasm of N. crassa (but not A. nidulans) and believed to arise from microbody precursors were without demonstrable cytochemical staining for microbody marker oxidases.

Identification of a herpesvirus isolated from cytomegalovirus-transformed human cells.

Human cells transformed by cytomegalovirus and transplanted to athymic nude mice yielded a cytopathic virus, Hershey Medical Center virus, following prolonged in vitro passage of the tumor cells. The virus is a double-enveloped herpesvirus, is sensitive to ether, and is inhibited by iododeoxyuridine. No significant antigenic relationship to herpes simplex virus was detected using herpes simplex virus-immune sera in neutralization and immunofluorescence tests, but indirect immunofluorescence tests revealed cytomegalovirus-related antigenicity. Further immunological tests revealed that Hershey Medical Center virus is antigenically indistinguishable from infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus. Thus, it appears that Hershey Medical Center virus is infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, which presumably appeared in the cell culture as a contaminant from fetal calf serum.

[Angiographic study of the vascularization of primary malignant tumors of the liver: histological correlation].

During the last seven years 118 patients with histologic diagnosis of malign tumor in the liver were examinated by selective angiography, amongst other diagnostic recourses: 14 patients had primitive tumors: 12 hepatoma, 1 cholangiocarcinoma and 1 hepatocholangiocarcinoma. In 12 patients resection was contraindicated preoperative by the angiographic demonstration of the extension of the tumor to both lobes. In 1 patient with cholangiocarcinoma, the tumor was resected with an outlive of 4 years. In 1 patient with hepatoma very vascular a hard league of the right hepatic artery was done. Two months later angiography demonstrated a rich revascularisation of the tumor with development of the colateral circulation. In our experience the hiper or hipovascularization is related with the degree of fibrosis which accompanies the tumor and no so much with the histologic type, the degrees of differentiation or the existence of intratumoral necrosis. Emphasis is been done to show the diagnostical difficulties of hipovascularized tumors and the importance of angiography in the preoperative evaluation of hepatic tumors.

[Aging in Peru].

After some remarks about the particular position of the elderly in the Inca period, some demographic data concerning the present-day situation of the elderly are presented. Their extremely deficient living conditions and the insufficient institutions taking care of the aged are described. In the second part, findings of an experimental study based on the Rorschachtest are given.
