Two patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) were treated with "marrow-lethal" chemoradiotherapy and infusion of cryopreserved autologous marrow. Patient AUT 04 (unique patient number), a 28-year-old male, was referred to us because of the right cervical lymphadenopathy. He was diagnosed NPC at stage II (T1N2M0). A trial of combined-modality therapy using autologous bone marrow transplantation (auto-BMT) was scheduled for possible cure. Before auto-BMT, he was treated with a conventional dose of radiation to the nasopharyngeal and bilateral cervical areas. For the pretransplant marrow-lethal therapy, he received high-dose cyclophosphamide (CY), 120mg/kg, and 1,000 rad total body irradiation (TBI). Within 24 hr after TBI, previously cryopreserved-thawed autologous bone marrow cells (1.37 X 10(8)/kg) was infused to the patient. Rapid and complete hematologic recovery was observed and he is now alive in a disease-free remission state 28 months after transplantation. Patient AUT 08, a 18-year-old female, was referred to us for the treatment of head and neck tumor with auto-BMT. She was diagnosed NPC at stage IV (T4N2M0). After cryopreservation of bone marrow, she was treated with local radiation and doxorubicin (80mg X 2d). Then she was conditioned with high-dose CY and upper half body irradiation and received auto-BMT (marrow dose: 1.2 X 10(7)/kg). Successful engraftment was obtained with tumor response but she developed recurrence of the disease 12 months after transplantation. Although the data are too preliminary, auto-BMT is evaluated as one of the favorable treatment approaches for some selected patients with NPC.

Of 16 human malignant tumor cell lines established in our laboratory, seven lines, including three gastric cancer cell lines derived from patients with cancer, were found to carry carcinoembryonic antigen on their cell surface, as determined by radioimmunoassay and indirect immunofluorescence. The existence of antibodies (IgG class) against the gastric cancer cell lines (HPE-GAC-T, -2, -3) and lung cancer cell line (HPL-Ad-K) in the sera of patients with gastrointestinal cancer (incidence 70.8%) was demonstrated by indirect immunofluorescence. In nonmalignant cases and healthy controls, the incidence was 7.7 and 3.2%, respectively. Specificity of the antibodies detected in the sera of patients with gastric cancer was examined by absorption and blocking test methods of immunofluorescence. Even though there was an apparent heterogeneity of the specificity among the antibodies, the detection of such antibodies may be a feasible and practical approach to a clinical diagnosis of malignancy.
A 23-month-old girl with intractable diarrhea that had persisted for the past 6 months showed typical evidence of water-diarrhea-hypokalemia-achlorhydria (WDHA) syndrome. Serum vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-like immunoactivity was very high, and urine homovanillic acid and noradrenaline were also abnormally increased. A calcified tumor in the right paravertebral region was noted radiologically. Soon after resection of the tumor, the diarrhea dramatically improved. A ganglioneuroblastoma was histologically confirmed. Serum VIP decreased to normal level at 1 h after the removal of the tumor. VIP activity in the tumor was extraordinarily high, and the cells were stained by the indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti-VIP serum. This is to report the rapid turnover of serum level of VIP after resection of ganglioneuroblastoma with WDHA syndrome in a child.

A case of acute diffuse phlegmonous gastritis in a 54 year old man with an abrupt onset of upper abdominal pain, high fever and complete anorexia was presented. The stomach wall was remarkably thickened and rigid. Histologically there was massive infiltration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the submucosa and muscularis of the stomach wall. The lamina muscularis mucosae was fragmented by the numerous small focal abscesses.

Continuous measurements of arterial pressures, heart rates, respiratory movements, and respiratory rates were made from birth in 44 infants at risk from intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH). 17 babies died with IVH, in 10 of whom the event was timed objectively. Events in these babies were compared with survivors of similar birthweights, gestational ages, severity of birth asphyxia, and severity of hyaline membrane disease (HMD). IVH followed severe HMD and was associated with cessation of the babies' own respiratory efforts while on a ventilator and also with characteristic cardiorespiratory events. The minimum arterial pressure before IVH was lower than in comparable babies who survived. It is suggested that fluctuations of systemic blood pressure from initial low levels may be important in the pathogenesis of IVH. It is possible that changes in cerebral blood flow are of even greater significance.
Spontaneous tumors in urodele amphibians have been considered uncommon, and this resistance has sometimes been associated with the natural regenerative capacity of tissues in such species. This report describes spontaneous, nonpigmented, benign epitheliomas which were found in 44 of 1586 (2.8%) adult newts, Cynops pyrrhogaster, captured in central Japan. Both sexes were affected equally, usually with single tumors occurring at any epidermal site. Under laboratory conditions, these large tumors rapidly regressed or disappeared. Lesions were histologically noninvasive, hyperplastic epidermal reactions accompanied by loss of basal, subdermal melanocytes. Ultrastructurally, enlargement of intercellular spaces between tumor cells, increased pigment granules and membrane-bound cytoplasmic aggregates within the spaces, swollen rough endoplasmic reticula, degenerating pigment granules, and altered corneal cells were noted. Virus-like particles were observed in one tumor cell. Prelminary attempts failed to demonstrate transmissibility of the tumor, and no new cases arose under laboratory conditions. The cause of these tumors in the Japanese newt remains unknown, and it is suggested that if a viral agent is involved then other environmental cofactors (diet, temperature, or water constituents) are required for its expression.
