Chronic treatment of pregnant rats with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) and its analogues (Analogue I: des-Gly10-LH-RH-ethylamide; Analogue II: des-Gly10-[D-Ala6]-LH-RH-ethylamide) inhibited implantation of the ovum. Analogues I and II were 4.5 and 173 times potent than native LH-RH in inhibiting implantation respectively. On Day 8 of the treatment with Analogue II, the pituitary glands of the pregnant rats contained approximately 10% of the amount of LH and FSH found in intact pregnant rats. By contrast, serum levels of LH were significantly higher and those of FSH significantly lower in Analogue II-treated rats than in control rats. The ovaries of Analogue II-treated rats were lighter than those of control rats because of smaller corporalutea and less developed follicles. Peripheral serum concentrations of progesterone in rats treated with LH-RH and its analogues were significantly lower than those in control rats. The peripheral serum concentration of progesterone declined earlier in rats treated with LH-RH and Analogue I than it did in rats treated with Analogue II. The inhibitory affect of Analogue II was overcome by concurrent treatment with the following combinations of hormones: progesterone + oestradiol; progesterone + human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG); prolactin + oestradiol; and prolactin + hCG. Treatment with progesterone or prolactin alone did not overcome the effect of Analogue II. These results indicate that Analogue II stimulates the production and release of LH and release of FSH to cause high ratios of LH/prolactin and LH/FSH. The induced imbalance of gonadotropins suppresses the development of ovarian follicles and corpora lutea and reduces secretion of both oestrogen and progesterone. The resulting low levels of ovarian steroids cause a delay in implantation.

With the use of bidirectional echocardiography, the isometric contraction (ICT) and relaxation times (IRT) of both ventricles were measured in 14 normal subjects (N), 6 cases with right ventricular (RV) diastolic overloading (DO), and 5 cases with RV systolic overloading (SO). The RVDO group consisted of patients with atrial septal defect of ostium secundum type who had large left-to-right shunting, and the RVSO group those with pulmonary hypertension of various origins. The mean ICT and IRT in N were 28.5 +/- 4.8 and 43.8 +/- 1.7 msec for RV, and 43.3 +/- 5.6 and 60.9 +/- 9.0 msec for left ventricle (LV), respectively. The RVDO group showed no significant change in the mean ICT and IRT of RV (29.7 +/- 4.6 and 54.3 +/- 11.8 msec, respectively), but significantly greater means of ICT and IRT of LV (58.5 +/- 9.5 and 83.6 +/- 14.1 msec, respectively. In the RVSO group, the mean ICT and IRT were 51.0 +/- 4.1 and 86.8 +/- 8.2 msec for RV, and 72.4 +/- 12.2 and 116.0 +/- 20.4 msec for LV, respectively. These values were all significantly greater than the means for both N and RVDO groups, except that the mean ICT of LV was insignificantly different between the RVDO and RVSO groups. It was noted that the intervals of LV tended to increase with the increasing intervals of RV, suggesting the changes in LV function secondarily due to RV overloading. It was concluded that the measurement of ICT and IRT of both ventricles is of clinical value for evaluation of overall cardiac function in the patients with RV overloading.

Three consecutive patients undergoing corrective operation for the infracardiac type of total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (TAPVD) were found to have tree-shaped pulmonary veins. Preoperative angiocardiography revealed that in 2 patients the superior and inferior pulmonary veins drained separately, bilaterally, into the vertical vein. In the third patient the right pulmonary veins united to connect with the vertical vein, while the left superior and inferior pulmonary veins drained separately into the vertical vein. At operation inferior pulmonary veins connecting separately with the vertical vein were found to be located posterior to the pericardium. In the previous literature dealing with successful repair of infracardiac TAPVD, there is no mention of the tree-shaped pulmonary veins described in this report. As this particular type of pulmonary vein does not seem to be uncommon, its possible presence should be kept in mind during operation, as it may dictate the selection of surgical procedures.
The outcome was studied of gastric carcinoma found in six selected mass survey groups. One-hundred-and-thirty-seven cases of gastric carcinoma were detected and followed-up postoperatively for 16 years at the longest. They consisted of 55 cases of early and 74 of advanced carcinoma with eight cases of unknown depth of involvement. Early carcinoma amounted to 42-6% of the cases with known depth of involvement. The relative five-year and 10-year survival rates calculated by the method of Ederer et al. (1961) in the 137 cases were 0-628 and 0-642, respectively, and those for early carcinoma were 0-959 and 1-016. These survival rates are remarkably high. The five-year survival rate in those who were followed-up after operation for more than five years (83 cases) was 0-554, which is much higher than that of the outpatient cases, who presented themselves for medical advice with some symptoms. The good prognosis is largely explained by a high incidence of early gastric carcinoma in the cases detected in the mass survey. Where methods of screening were concerned, the use of the gastrocamera markedly improved the detection rate of gastric carcinoma.
A modified sequence of insulin B21-26, beta-Ala-Arg-Gly-Phe-Phe-Tyr-NH2 (DP-432), was synthesized and tested for its biological activities. The hexapeptide, ip injected to mice, stimulated [U-14C]-glucose incorporation into diaphragm glycogen and adipose tissue total lipid. Neither plasma glucose nor FFA (free fatty acid) was reduced by the injection. However, when injected with epinephrine, the peptide prevented a rise of plasma FFA but not that of plasma glucose due to epinephrine. In vitro, the peptide stimulated glucose oxidation and inhibited epinephrine- or isoproterenol-stimulated lipolysis of mouse adipose tissue. Furthermore, when added along with insulin to incubation media, the peptide exaggerated the effects of insulin on both glucose oxidation and isoproterenol-stimulated lipolysis. The hexapeptide thus seems to have an insulin-potentiating action as well as insulin like activities on peripheral tissue.
