Characteristics of the maternal lymphoid response of mice to paternal strain antigens induced by homologous pregnancy.

Mice mated with H-2 incompatible males were shown to have an increased frequency of specific allocluster-forming spleen cells to paternal strain erythrocytes. The time course of the response was similar to that expected following a skin allograft. The graft-versus-host responsiveness of the maternal lymphocytes was generally elevated in the post-partum period in matings with males incompatible at either the H2 locus or non-H2 loci. The implications of these responses with respect to their different lymphocyte mediators and possible interactions are discussed with the view that a B-cell mediated immune response to paternal antigens may be contributory to foetal survival.

Maternal immunization to paternal antigens in multiparous mice.

Mice of the CBA strain which had given birth to five litters sired by males of a different H-2 type (C57BL/10) showed evidence of immunization to paternal antigens, in that the numbers of lymphocytes forming alloclusters with paternal erythrocytes were significantly elevated. On the other hand, the graft-versus-host responsiveness of maternal splenic lymphocytes to paternal antigens remained virtually unchanged, showing only a slight increase at Day 8 of the assay.

Morphometric analysis of the histology of spontaneous fetal resorption in a murine pregnancy.

Immunopathology of the spontaneous resorption phenomenon in the CBA x DBA/J murine model was explored using morphometric analysis. Accompanying the previously reported presence of natural killer (NK) cells in resorptive feto-placental units we find major changes in tissue morphology indicating that early infiltration of the feto-placental unit by maternal leukocytes plays a direct role with NK cells in fetal demise. Total number of cell nuclei per field and total nuclear area per field were significantly elevated in feto-placental units containing abnormally increased NK cell presence before detectable resorption as early as day 7 of gestation. This difference persisted throughout all stages of early gestation up to and including the final resorption event at day 10 to 12. Increases in cell density were also detected in areas of the embryonic unit not associated with NK infiltration. These results demonstrate that the spontaneous resorption phenomenon in this model involves: (i) Early (day 7-8) cellular infiltration of the decidual-ectoplacental cone junction associated with the presence in this area of NK cells. (ii) Late (day 8-9) cellular infiltration of the ectoplacental cone.

[Immunologic responses of the anterior chamber of the eye].

A better understanding of the ocular immune responses should help us determine the etiology and pathophysiology of many uveitides. Ocular immune "privilege" is the result of the interaction of factors such as the blood-ocular barrier, the absence of lymphatic vessels, the sequestration of retinal antigens, the presence of local immunomodulators in the aqueous humor, and anterior chamber-associated immune deviation (ACAID). The purpose of this review is to discuss some of the immunologic characteristics of the anterior chamber of the eye, their relation to intraocular inflammation and their systemic effects.
