[Anatomical observation and experimental studies on changes in structure and volume of intravertebral canal during backward extension of neck].

The authors dissected cervical vertebral specimens from 10 cadavers. Changes in structures of intravertebral canal were observed during extension-flexion movement. By pouring wax into vertebral canal, changes of the sagittal diameter and the cross-section area were measured during backward extension of the neck. It was found that the morphology and position of fibrous annuli, subflavous ligaments, the spinal canal and the dura mater were all changed. These changes can affect the volume of the vertebral canal, and can press the spinal cord when they are severe.

Mutational analysis of the N terminus of the protein of maize transposable element Ac.

Mutations of transposable element Ac were tested for their capability to excise themselves from their location autonomously, to be excised by an active Ac, or to act in trans in the excision of an Ac delta element. Removal of 101 amino acids from the N terminus of the Ac protein does not decrease excision. A cis-acting site between base pairs 186 and 207 is important for excision by the wild-type protein but is not necessary for excision by the truncated protein. Improvement of the sequence context of the first AUG does not have a significant effect. Mutations in a small open reading frame of Ac encoding a 102-amino acid protein do not visibly alter excision frequency.

[Pharmacokinetics of albendazole and its metabolites in human body].

High-performance liquid chromatography method was used to determine blood sulfoxide and sulfone, two metabolites of albendazole. Methanol containing 0.4% acetic acid was employed as mobile phase. Wavelength of 290 nm was chosen for uv-detector and mebendazole was used as internal standard. After a single dosage of albendazole 25 mg/kg was taken orally by healthy volunteers and neurocysticercosis patients, sulfoxide and sulfone were found in blood at 20 and 40 min respectively. The blood peak level appeared at 6 h on an average. The metabolites remained as long as 58-72 h in human blood.

Rapid enzymatic determination of urinary oxalate.

This new reagent kit for the quantitative measurement of oxalate in urine is a modification of an earlier Sigma oxalate assay procedure (procedure no. 590), a coupled enzyme assay involving oxalate oxidase and horseradish peroxidase. The new analytical procedure includes methods for processing urine specimens to eliminate interference with oxalate color development at 590 nm by ascorbic acid, divalent cations, and other urinary constituents. The reaction is complete in less than 5 min, and results are linearly related to oxalate concentration up to at least 1 mmol/L. Assay sensitivity and within-run and between-run precision were within the limits acceptable for other urinary oxalate procedures. Analytical recovery of added oxalate was close to 100%. This specific, simple, rapid procedure is suitable for routine clinical use.

Effect of alkali chlorides on human chromosomes studied by the method of poly-L-lysine binding.

Human metaphase chromosomes A1 and A3 did bind more tritiated poly-L-lysine ([3H]PL) when they were isolated from lymphocyte cultures treated with LiCl rather than with NaCl or KCl. A2 chromosome did not show this differential behavior and in all three cases did bind more [3H]PL than the control A2 chromosome. The effect was dependent on the time of exposure of cells to the salts in tissue culture and on the degree of chromosomal contraction. The observed differences in [3H]PL binding are probably due to differences in surface morphology of the three chromosomes caused by treatment with alkali metal salts.
