Further possibilities of using aryloxycarbonic acid derivatives in clinical practice.

In medical practice aryloxycarbonic acid derivatives have been solely used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. Recently we patented the use of some of these derivatives in the treatment of dermatological diseases. Further analyses showed that these substances stimulated various cells of mesodermal origin including lymphocytes, the principal cells of the immune system. Depending on the concentration some derivatives of aryloxycarbonic acid stimulated or suppressed the proliferative response of lymphocytes, pointing to the possible use of these drugs as immunomodulators in clinical practice as well.

Quantitative analysis of immunocomplex deposits in the skin of patients with collagenosis.

The aim of this work was to contribute to identifying more precise diagnostic criteria of particular collagenosis. In a group of 215 patients with clinical diagnosis of collagenosis immunocomplex deposits at the dermal-epidermal junction were determined. The results, when compared with the clinical and histopathological findings, showed that direct immunofluorescence of skin sections of patients with collagenosis confirms the clinical diagnosis significantly more often than does the histopathologic analysis. The advantage of this test suggests that it should be used as an additional diagnostic method for confirming systemic diseases of the collagenous tissue.

Psoriasis in the third age.

This study was performed during a 10-year period at several hospitalization centres from various districts in Slovenia and Croatia. The number of elderly patients, above 65 years, compared with the total number of inpatients in the aforementioned departments and clinics in the course of 10 years ranged from 12% to 25%. The percentage of psoriatics, according to the total number of elderly in-patients was 1.8% in Rijeka, 2.3% in Maribor, 4% in Celje and up to 6.1% in Zagreb. On the whole, 241 psoriatics (165 males and 76 females) were treated in the above centres during a 10-year period. The number of patients with psoriasis vulgaris was 214 on the whole; among them 13 presented with psoriasis arthropatica, 6 with pustular psoriasis (one with the palmo-plantar variety) and 8 with erythrodermic psoriasis. Retinoids (etretinate) increase serum lipids and decrease HDL cholesterol in the long-term treatment, thus increasing the already existing risk of atherosclerosis and of coronary heart diseases in older life age. Serum lipids, HDL and LDL cholesterol and A and B apolipoprotein are therefore monitorized each week when etretinate has been given.

Epithelium of the human palatal tonsil used for new test antigen in IIF examination (for pemphigus, pemphigoid antibodies and ANA).

The author presents the results of IIF examinations for pemphigus, pemphigoid antibodies and antinuclear antibodies (ANA) on the epithelium of the human palatal tonsil obtained by tonsillectomy in patients with chronic hypertrophic tonsillitis. Tonsil epithelium is more sensitive to intercellular antibodies (IC Ab), and antibodies of the basal membrane zone (BMZ Ab) than sample tissue of the monkey esophagus, while its reaction to ANA is the same or even weaker than monkey esophagus.

Ultrastructural features of psoralen plus black light induced successive changes in psoriatic cell.

Based on an ultramicroscopic investigation of the psoralen plus black light-induced photodynamic reaction in the psoriatic cell, there is evidence that the primary reaction takes place in the nuclei, which possess abundant nucleic acid. This initial reaction is manifested by a large vacuole situated in the nucleus. As the vacuole gradually enlarges, the nucleus becomes an annex to the vacuole, while the cytoplasm of the cell succumbs to the necrobiotic process.

Tonofilament-desmosome complex in induced regenerated epidermis in senile elastosis. An electron microscopic study.

This paper presents the ultramicroscopic structure of the epidermis in senile elastosis, and compares it with the structure of an induced regenerated specimen in the same layers. In the regenerated specimen it was found that tonofilament-desmosome complexes have been replaced by a regular twist of villous processes. Such a substitution influences the structure and function of keratinocytes. Newly-formed structures may be established even 10 years after the induction.
