Fractal and nonfractal analysis of cell images: comparison and application to neuronal dendritic arborization.

Neurons of the rat spinal cord were stained using the Golgi impregnation method. Successfully impregnated neurons from laminae II, III, and VI were subjected to fractal and nonfractal analyses. Fractal analysis was performed using length-related techniques. Since an application of fractal methods to the analysis of dendrite arbor structures requires caution, we adopted as appropriate a nonfractal method proposing a generalized power-law model with two main nonfractal parameters: (i) the anfractuosity, characterizing the degree of dendritic deviation from straight lines; and (ii) an estimate of the total length of arbor dendrites. The anfractuosity can distinguish between two sets of drawings where the fractal methods failed. We also redefine some basic concepts of fractal geometry, present the ruler-counting method, and propose a new definition of fractal dimension.

[Structure, treatment and success of treatment in invasive carcinomas of the uterine cervix].

At the University Hospital Gynecological Department in Zagreb 1666 cancers of the uterine cervix were treated in the period of 4 years [1969--1972]. Among them were only 309 carcinomas in situ, the remaining 1357 were invasive. The distribution by stages was as follows: IA--75, IB--223, II--326, III--611, IV--122. Such unfavourable groups of cervical cancers proceed from the fact that cancer in situ and the early cancer stage I are often treated in other institutions; only the patients with advanced cancer, a poor general condition and those with various accompanying diseases are concentrated in the above quoted institution where there are technical possibilities and a team of surgeons and radiotherapists well educated in the treatment of cervical cancer. The authors present a five-year survival achieved by surgical, radiological, as well as by a combined method of treatment. The total cure rate for stage I was 87.6%, for stage II 64,4%, for stage III 34.4% and for stage IV 6.6%.

[Chemotherapy of malignant tumors in gynecology].

Chemotherapy is routinely applied in a number of malign tumours of female genital organs, primarily in the tumours of the trophoblast and ovarian carcinoma. Its use is often in discord with the present-day konwledge, either in the choice of cytostatics and the optimal time of application or in the combination of different drugs and their dosage. A brief review is given of the basic aspects of cellular biology, of the characteristics of normal and tumour cells, and the principles underlying present-day chemotherapy. Cytostatics having proved particularly effective in the treatment of gynecological tumours are listed separately, along with their daily and total doses and the toxic effects they produce. Also the most frequent schemes for polychemotherapy are presented. Except for the treatment of choriocarcinoma, chemotherapy in gynecology is still the auxiliary method, and for this reason it should be rendered accordant with the classical treatment by radiation and surgery. Chemotherapy is developing very rapidly and what at present is considered peripheral may become of prime importance tomorrow. An all-round plan in the therapy of genital carcinoma can be established only in institutions in which teams of related experts monitor all advances in this field.

[Pseudomyxoma peritonei].

The clinical course of 8 patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei developed from ovariah tumors and 3 from mucocoele appendicis is presented. Except in two instances, all tumors were originally benign, one of them with metastases of kystoma mucinosum to inguinal lymphnods. The treatment was basically surgical and consisted of the removal of sree and organised mucus and, naturally, of the ovarian tumor or muccocoele where possible. Supplementary local chemotherapy with 5 -- fluorouracyl were of some benefit. In one instance, where multiple small pappillomas were found in the visceral and parietal peritoneum, all metastases disppeared after the intra abdominal application of 150 mC of Au.

[The value of the lymphocyte transformation index induced by mitogens in cervical carcinoma].

Dynamics of immune reactivity in patients with the carcinoma of the cervix was determined. The transformation of their lymphocytes was induced in vitro by phytohemagglutinin (PHA), and the transformation index--a correlate of immunological reactivity--was determined at the following intervals: just before the start of the therapeutic procedure, at the end of the procedure, and every three months afterwards. Very low values of the transformation index, i. e. pronounced immunosuppression, characterized the initial period in all the patients, regardless of either the degree of the disease or the age of the patients. The suppression was prominent during 6 to 18 months following the therapeutic procedures and was overcome earlier in young patients bearing smaller tumors. The results indicate that in tumor-bearing patients a pronounced suppression of immune reactivity occurs after the PHA administration and that it could persist several months after the therapy.
